connecting gps to VHF?
Submitted by Rob H on Thu, 2014-08-28 10:35
Im trying to get my Navman DSC to work with input from my Lowrance without success, has anyone done this?
Its a Lowrance LCX37 to Navman 7100.
Googling doesnt gring up an installation manual for VHF, ops manual doesnt cover connection. Navico no help either.
Anyone got any practical tips?

I have a Navman 7100 in mine
I have a Navman 7100 in mine and I'm about to rip it out and replace with an iCom. I will have a look and see how its connected, but my GPS is Raymarine.
I might have an installation manual for the Navman as well, give me a day or so to check for you.

My 7100 seems to connect to
My 7100 seems to connect to the gps via a black cable with a specific plug on it. I can only assume this, as the only other cables coming out the back of the vhf are antenna and power. The black cable seems to disappear into the mess of wiring in the dash for the raymarine plotter/sounder/radar.
Unfortunately I doing have an installation manual either

I have a Lowrance Globalmap
I have a Lowrance Globalmap 7200 talking to a Navman 7200 DSC.
Cant check actual wiring at the moment but from 6 yr old scribble Try the following:
Gps NMEA 0183 Com1
Yellow tx > Navman green
Orange Rx > Navman yellow
Join both ground (shield) together.
There are a few other combos on the page that must of been tried as well but the above is on the bottom of page so maybe the last try.
My radio goes into hissy fit if it can't detect a gps signal and starts trying to make what sounds like phone calls. Only solution I have found is to make sure the gps is on when the radio is on. Bummer if your anchored up for the night but want to leave the radio on.
Hope that helps.

You can turn off the gps
You can turn off the gps alerts in the menu, i managed to get it to do that today.
But the connections you wrote i tried today, no joy unfortunately.

Checked my wiring today, and
Checked my wiring today, and have now binned all the notes I used to write the settings above.
This is how mine is wired, using COM port1 on the Lowrance, and been working for 6 years:
Navman Yellow (GPS+) to Lowrance Yellow (transmit)
Navman Green (GPS-) to Lowrance Orange (receive)
Ground to ground.
Note that my Lowrance is different model to yours.

ahh, thanks Bellony, I will
ahh, thanks Bellony, I will try again once I get my MMSI number. By ground I assume you mean shield?
It certainly wont work as it is and maybe Vin etc are correct and it wont allow the DSC to work without it?
The Navman only allows you to add a MMSI number once and mine appears to have not had one added.

I cant remember back that far
I cant remember back that far to know if gps location worked on the radio without MMSI setup. Maybe not as it would be pretty useless info.
Yes, ground and shield are the same according to the Lowrance manual. I have a hunch that the shield (ground) does not matter but that it what is working on mine.
What makes this really confusing is that each manufacturer uses different terms for their cabling. Navman installation manual says the yellow wire is "NMEA IN (+)" but then on the actual yellow wire puts a label "GPS (+)".
Having an MMSI, which AMSA links to your EPIRB rego, can be a bit of a pain because they don't let you change any of the EPIRB rego details online, you have to contact them and go through a special process.
Good luck

thanks for that Tony, I
thanks for that Tony, I noticed the same thing about the labelling! I would like to get it working given the sort of trips we do with the boat.
Will give it a go when I get home in a few days, sitting outside Onslow right now :-)

Rob H,You probably already
Rob H,
You probably already know, but as Vinesh mentioned you do require an MMSI number from AMSA to allow you to this.
See links below.

Don't forget that once it is correctly wired you will still need to go into your menu and switch DSC on.
Good luck,

Yeah fully aware of that,
Yeah fully aware of that, waiting for a replacement of my ROCP to apply for one.
But that shouldnt stop the VHF from recognising a GPS input?
At least not according to Lowrance

Frustrating hey Rob
Your lowrance has the same wiring as mine, and the Navman 7100 & 7200 also have the same wiring, so that only leaves the software setup in each device.
I would be checking that you have nmea 0183 setup correctly in each device, parity, baud rate, com port 1 etc. Also that the lowrance is told to transmit nmea 0183 data and that the navman is setup to receive nmea 0183 data.
Don't confuse nmea 0183 with nmea 2000, very different creatures.

yeah the Lowrance is set for
yeah the Lowrance is set for 0183, but there is no option in the VHF to change or select 0183 or 2000 so I assume its only 0183
