Coral bay area - recommended rod, reel and rigs

Hi all,
This is my first post so please be nice.

I'm heading to the coral bay area for two weeks soon and am after a cheap to mid range allrounder beach combo that should cover most of the basic species I might encounter up there on the beaches.

I am a novice so I don't want to go overboard just something for fun and not have me soaking the line while everyone else around me cleans up.

I had a quick yarn to the local fish shop and he said that there is no need to have the biggest rods as a lot if the action is metres from the shoreline.

So he put me onto things like the Shimano Catana shorespin 902 6-8kg or the spin 682 6-8kg combo and they seem like a cheap but 'decent' kit for someone like myself in this situation. The reel in the combo is the Shimano Solstice 40000 FL. I know these are probably a very low level piece of kit for most but as mentioned... I would not consider myself a dedicated fisho by any regards so obviously getting the latest kit would just be a waste.. And I'd rather look like a novice with cheap stuff over looking like someone with all the gear but no idea.

So yeah,  any recommendations on rods reels, line, leader and rigs would be hugely be appreciated as well as places (obviously not secret spots)  and times and tides.

Again guys, anything will help...
One last thing, I wrote this all on my mobile and it was a quite a pain.
Unfortunately the Tapatalk app doesn't seem to find this forum.

Thanks in advance,
Ryno77

 hey bud

my best advice to a novice would be to see as many tackle shops as you can, let them sell you (without buying) there ideal combo. i have been through and still am going through the same dilema as you. the best way i learnt was with someone (expert) teaching me the reason certain rods flex and the load reels can take.

i would suggest asking to borrow a combo until your certain you want to fish, it may cost you a carton but better then 200 - 300 a decent salesman could make you spend, if this is not possible then go with what combo FEELS best in the shop not what others tells you is best

Good combo

I've got the Catana 902 and a 682, bought them when first arrived in Aus and 4 years later still really like them. I've given the 682 some real punishment running 20lb fins braid, The Solstice 4000 reel is also good for the money.

havent tried the catanas yet

Thu, 2014-07-17 20:03

havent tried the catanas yet but am looking at those exact combos to take to exmouth with me in set/oct, spoke to tackleworld who didnt recomend the 9ft combo on the grounds the added weight would tire you casting all day an yeh the extra distance doesnt help to much. either way i still intend to get both the 902 and 682 atm for rock and boat fishing never heard anything bad about the solstace either. that being said bcf special atm on the sedona/starlo stix is only slightly more than the catana/sol, was the first combo i bought when i started out, 2500 rel on 2-4kg stick had 6lb and now 8lb braid and i use it everywhere from the river on bream to shark bay snapper and love it. good range of sizes/wieght and they make a great beginner combo, 5-8kg 7ft6 with the 4000 and 15-20lb braid would work for most things up there and down here, off a boat etc. this is just from my limited exp and im surethe more knowledgable guys on the site will have more but hope that helps some!

Hey Ryno

I usually fish from a boat but when in Coral bay I do take a break and give both the beach at mauds and the ramp groyne a shot. I fish with a 7' 3-5kg spin stick fitted with a cheap Shimano Sienna and 10lb braid. I reckon the lot cost me about $150. On this outfit I have landed several large 4-5kg spangos as well as lots of other smaller species, including on one day a squillion  small GT's all about 1kg. Well maybe not a squillion but a bloody lot !

Rod and reel performs faultlessly and being light gear you can use it all day and have loads of fun. Although not too much fun if a small shark grabs it. Have to snap off quick or all your braid is gonsky. When are you up there ?

cheers

Small halco twisties & plastics are a winner for trevs, queenies ect to the south of the boat ramp. 20,30 grams are a good start.

You could also throw a squid jig around to the south of the boat ramp. we had some good luck with the squid 1 week ago.

15 Pound braid and 30 pound leader would be more than enough.
