Corona Virus

Well it’s strange times we live in, seeing plenty of stories that concern, my wife is a diabetic so she’s at risk. Elderly at risk. Seeing posts this morning where it’s also being transmitted via fuel pumps, so that’s something else to be considered. I’m happy to sit at home, just venture out for alcohol runs. Look after yourselves and your families, and hopefully we all come out the other side in good health.
On a side note, I saw yesterday where Trump said, this virus is killing people who haven’t died before.

 It’s a farce. Many people

Tue, 2020-03-24 19:57

It’s a farce. Many people are going to the beach to swim premier said it’s ok as long as people social distance. How is going solo fishing or fishing with kids worse than going to the beach? As long as they’re aren’t any groups it’s ok apparently. Quote police are patrolling the beach to ensure large groups don’t gather..... reported this afternoon

could be extremely dangerous. I'm no expert on nasty virus, what if this thing survives travel through saltwater and all the frollickers in a big group that are no doubt spitting out water along with all the germs they have...all contributing to soon to become .."The Cottesloe whirlpool of death"

Fishing is bad

Tue, 2020-03-24 20:19

I think everyone should stay at home . Hygiene the key factor in this case. Lots of humour around on subject . ( not a bad thing). Think of elderly people who we could loose or kids with health issues /sister /brother list goes on. Not hard keep distance and hygiene. Only just started . Only going to get worse from here. My wife just made a heap of soap for people pump bottles ect for cost ( anti bacterial stuff) . She is high risk . Rather than sitting doing nothing she is trying to help people . That’s the spirit that will get us all through this . Everyone going to suffer in near future. Mortgage repayments/food on table ect. 88 thousand people lost there jobs yesterday . Very sad. So much for people saying it’s nothing . Hard times ahead

Grey nomads

Tue, 2020-03-24 21:37

I guess the grey nomad brigade will be quite upset about the travel restrictions for a short while. When they realise that they are in the high risk group of society it will no doubt bring a sobering effect on them and they will then realise that it's their life that the restrictions are brought in to save.
I feel sorry for those businesses up north that rely on the spending of the grey nomads and other people traveling around over Easter to sustain their income through the wet season

I see Exmouth is requesting visitors to turn around and head home.
Going up north and excaping it all seems like a great idea, but you'd wanna make sure there is plenty of food and fresh water wherever your going incase shit really hits the fan

It;s not the food and water

Wed, 2020-03-25 06:50

It;s not the food and water that is the issue, it is if they get sick and it happens en masse the medical facilities WILL NOT COPE.

Our hospital does a bloody good job coping with the issues up here without having to look after fools that should have stayed home.

A lot of people out there

Wed, 2020-03-25 05:59

A lot of people out there stil think this is a big joke, it's not, things are escalating very quickly, it's only just starting here so now is the time to act. Just take a look at how bad things are getting over seas now. The thing we need to remember is that if people don't change the way they live their lives then things will keep getting worse and we will

be locked down. Once more and more people get this virus the ICU beds will be full, there won't be enough beds docotors or equipment to treat new patients, whether they have the virus or they have another illness, or they are in a car accident or have a heart attack etc, those people will just die.
we all need to do everything we can to help stop this thing spread, be smart, things are going to get a lot worse here over the coming weeks.
2 weeks ago I though it was all a big joke, we'll be fine, it's just the media blowing things up like always, but now it's become very apparent that it's not a big media hype, this shit is real. The longer people do the bare minimum to stop this thing spreading, the further it will spread, the more people will be infected, the longer these restrictions will be in place and the tighter the restrictions will get

Initially it seemed to me like a media blowout however my eyes have been opened wide to how out of control this can/has become. Hindsight hey.. borders should have shut a week or 3 ago, especially for the eastern state's - NSW and QLD where it's basically a suburb with a line through it.

 Nail on the head there.

Wed, 2020-03-25 10:56

Nail on the head there. Government sat on their hands with the bushfires and were fingering their arses too long on this. Even still letting cruise ships full of infected people dock and walkoff onto planes to travel around the country. Should've shut boarders down with madatory 2 week isolation for travellers 3 weeks ago when it was still contollable. Now they've lost control and begin to act. We have to do all we can now, but its clear the country is run with money in mind not common sense and resident well being.

 I've just been told this

Wed, 2020-03-25 08:11

I've just been told this morning that a guy I work with, working closely with him last week, his wife's work colleague has just tested positive. They work together in an op shop so have had close contact. Everyone else is staying at work and hoping for the best. I've gone straight home and me and my wife are self isolating. Luckily me and my wife have taken this seriously and have not been visiting family and friends for a week now. So if I get it, at least I know I'm not passing it on. Now had I not been more careful and still living my life like normal, I'd be feeling pretty shit rite now that I may have potentially passed it on not knowing to my close friends and family.
I'm a causal construction plumber, casual but 40hrs a week, so no sick pay or holiday pay and I got bugger all money in the bank rite now after me and my wife went on a big over seas holiday at the start of this year, so I'm in no position to be taking unpaid leave, but I have to do the rite thing now and stop it from spreading.

My dads business vapourised pretty much overnight. Tourism industry based in the NT he was almost fully booked for the upcoming season. Now zero bookings. He returned all deposits and for the first time in 50 years walked into Centrelink. Better situation than a lot but heartbreaking all the same.

Some on here for years know

Wed, 2020-03-25 09:22

Some on here for years know what I do for a living. Now all will.

I am a Doctor and at the frontline in this WAR. Not at the firefight frontline like my daughter as a nurse at a COVID clinic or hospitals, but in the community.

But what we need to fully understand is flattening the curve. It is banded around but unchecked this Virus spreads at a rate of between 2-5 contacts per case (various studies show this so nobody knows exactly). If we reduce that to less than 1 we will see less cases, and the curve will flatten, ie the rise in number will reduce.

Now some patients WILL need ventilators. They are fairly complex machines and need trained people to use them. There is not nearly as many as we might/will need!!!

If their use become saturated, ie more patients needing it than what is available, then some BLOODY horrible decisions will have to be made.

Who has a better chance of surviving and who don’t -- "Battlefield Triage".

The more cases the lower that choice become, and it might drop in a worst case scenario to choices between say a 20yo and a 30yo. Scary thought but totally realistic should there be 1 million or more cases. AND young people have died, but they do very well with Ventilator support if critically ill.

We will get to those scary scenarios unless we take this as more serious than what we can think or imagine It is CRITICAL we follow the rules to a maximum "T". If we do the Curve will flatten. 100% follow it to the maximum we will look like China's curve. However if 30% only don’t follow this we will be screwed. In between 100%-80% we can reduce the curve to manageable in 60-90days.

As I said if 20--30% say "Fuck you" we then we are!!!

Follow the rules to 100% please.

Stay safe everyone and please listen.

Doc

Italy

Wed, 2020-03-25 13:50

Something we have in our favour that many countrys do not, is that we predominantly live in houses not appartments.

Whilst WA is not an island, I can see WA coming clean quite quickly because of our living arrangements and isolation, if we stop being idiots.

Sure, the cruise ships are stuffing things up, but, I think if people are able to keep their kids at home they should. This will allow the schools to reduce class sizes and allow those teachers who cant work from home to actually stay home and either watch their own kids or start working on other education solutions.

The government has said that there is no penalty for kids who stay home. But, make sure that if you keep your kids home that they actually stay home. Its not that hard. Its not nice nor indeed the preferred option, but for fu#@k sake, we arent having our houses bombed or running out of food. We are just being asked to sit tight for a while.

For all those whose businesses are in strife, my heart goes out to you.

For anyone who has paid a deposit or booked something in advance, if you are able to do so, perhaps leave the money with the vendor with the option of redeeming it later. It gives you something to look forward to and may just help keep someone in business another week. If a few do that, they may then hold on a few months and find a way out on the other side.

Be kind everyone. In what ever way you can. I am worried that our suicide rate is going to spike. Keep in touch and offer support at any opportunity. If you think someone is struggling, dont just ask them once...revisit it and as again if a few days.

If you are able, do something for others that you normally wouldnt do. Even little acts of kindness or generosity can go along way to getting someone who is desperate a little closer to hope.

Email I received from Recfishwest today

Wed, 2020-03-25 16:05

Recfishwest is urging all WA fishers to take responsibility during the COVID-19 crisis and follow all the recommended precautions by the Government around social distancing and non-essential travel between regions.

We all love fishing and its value for mental health and well-being is greater than ever right now with it providing many in our community a much-needed break during these stressful times.

However, advice from the Government last night was very clear: if you can stay at home, you should stay at home.

We each have a responsibility as fishers to protect ourselves, our families and our community. This means we all need to play our role as individuals and strictly follow the guidance of both the Commonwealth and State Governments to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Social distancing is a critical component of the current advice.

Social distancing rules for outdoors state that you must maintain 1.5m of space (four square metres) between yourself and another person during non-essential activities. The 1.5m rule applies to boat and land-based fishing. It does not apply to members of your family or household.

In order to do our part in preventing the spread and to save lives, fishers need to:

•           Stay home where possible to minimise social interactions,

•           Fish locally only, near where you live and limit your time away from home,

•           Fish with your direct household members (no mates or extended family),

•           Travel directly to and from your home to prevent any social interactions,

•           Maintain spatial distancing of 1.5 metres from other people,

•           Fish alone, with family, or with household members only,

•           Do not congregate at land-based fishing locations, instead look for more secluded alternatives,

•           Stay away from popular man-made fishing structures such as jetties,

•           Do not go fishing if you are in quarantine, and

•           If you are unwell, you must self-isolate, do not go fishing if self-isolating.

The situation is rapidly changing and we all have a responsibility to keep ourselves up-to-date and follow the latest advice – we advise people follow the Department of Health’s advice as the most credible source. We will do our best to keep you informed

Fishing holiday and regional travel plans to go on hold

Yesterday, the WA Premier Mark McGowan announced laws are being drafted to restrict non-essential travel between regions to protect regional WA.

“Please stop your holidays, stay home – just do your essential stuff,” said the Premier at his press conference.

This will be a great disappointment to many who were looking forward to their fishing trips or holiday plans to regional WA for Easter. It also means we have had to postpone our Albany Salmon Spectacular 2020 event due to take place over the Easter Holidays. We will focus our efforts on making it a salmon fishing bonanza next year that the region deserves.

It is essential for everyone to put the health of our community, especially those most vulnerable, first.  We each have to do our part as West Aussies to get through to the other side – when recfishing will have a huge part to play in the social, well-being and economic recovery of this great State of ours.

Please stay safe, look after your loved ones and play your part.

Coral Bay is shutting off tomorrow. Peoples Park has been told to shut down, the other park did so a few days back. Now there are a heap of vans heading towards Exmouth and I expect they are going to be turned away in the next day or so. Here at Wooramel , we have closed the caravan park and the budget dongas, with only the ensuite ones still available

Wed, 2020-03-25 17:56

Have just changed my booking at Bayview. Like someone suggested above, was keen to leave my money with them and rebook for down the track. Earlier this week they were not taking bookings outside their normal 12 months in advance. Have since changed their sttance which I believe is a smart move. @Carnarvonite obviously this aweful virus is the reason why I never got back to you about dates in April... However will be looking for a place to stop in September 2021 though. Will contact you closer to the time.

No repairs as such...just quick clean / few x-Rays was all thats allowed atm, they have been told they are getting shut down in April, possible relocation to front line duties.

Social distancing and the shut down of any large gatherings will have an affect, pictures today of mass groups at Perth airport of FIFO workers all sitting together drinking coffee spinning shit before squeezing into a jet makes me wounder.

Mybe only filling 1 person every second row....OIL & GAS only....surely GOLD / IRON ORE etc going to CHINA can be put on fuckin HOLD!!

I'm due for an RDO friday...I'll be taking me boat out with a few cold ones rain hail or shine!!
