Corona Virus

Well it’s strange times we live in, seeing plenty of stories that concern, my wife is a diabetic so she’s at risk. Elderly at risk. Seeing posts this morning where it’s also being transmitted via fuel pumps, so that’s something else to be considered. I’m happy to sit at home, just venture out for alcohol runs. Look after yourselves and your families, and hopefully we all come out the other side in good health.
On a side note, I saw yesterday where Trump said, this virus is killing people who haven’t died before.

As far as I'm aware, you can stay within the state but borders will close. We're currently heading home before we need a permit to cross states. As it stands for us, we just need to get back to Victoria which we will do probably on Tuesday and head back to Geelong. Park the bus up for 12 months.

Sun, 2020-03-22 13:32

Looks like he's finally said something that I agree with . All NON ESSENTIAL travel has been asked to stop ASAP. It's a no brainer, everyone needs to stay put and chill the fuck out...... Keep the virus at bay by not travelling is a smart move.

 Total infected numbers in

Sun, 2020-03-22 13:45

Total infected numbers in Australia are doubling about every 3 days ....within two weeks we will have Italy's problem with hundreds of people dying in coridors of hospitals unless people do the right thing and do not travel.

It defenitly is a no brainer as Silver fox says.

Do the maths

Sun, 2020-03-22 16:40

past 2 weeks

March 7 = 74 cases Aust wide

March 22 = 1286 cases Aust wide

average rate of infection =  + 21% per day ...do the compound interest on that.

It's hopefull that social distancing measures will slow this rate.  Australia also has a few other things going for it (suburbia etc)

Italy was having great hospital problems by the time the national infection rate was somewhere around 20,000

At current rates (doubling every 3-4 days) It will be 2 weeks before Australia has 20,000 cases.  (I do thinks that the social distancing border closures and the comming school closures etc will have an impact on that and it should slow the rate of infection)

I see now that Vic. is closing schools and doubt that there will be a school open in Australia by mid week.  (public transport should be next)

Sorry bud I understand that holidays and fishing is close to us all ....and important to us all..... but if that's what you are thinking about now then you are just not understanding the gravity of the situation we are in.

FUCK I ABSOLUTELY hope that in two weeks everyone one here says to me .....haha idiot you were wrong.  I hope the current measures and comming measures will be enough to slow it considerably

BTW Italy is not worst case.

Mon, 2020-03-23 16:18

Exactly. People don't seem to understand that there is limited amount of ICU beds and respirators that are available. You'll have hospital services stretched so badly with an influx of patients that they will be triaging them like they are in Italy. Normal everyday stuff like car accidents and heart attacks etc wont go on hold whilst the virus circulates and these peoples care will suffer if the hospitals are overloaded with COVID patients. Not to mention that flu season is just around the corner, so without drastic measures you would have an absolute nightmare

I'm 3 months into a year off work and now this happens

Sun, 2020-03-22 15:38

Have been down south, up through the Goldfields and now back in Geraldton since last week as the situation has worsened.  We were going to head East, but changed our plans luckily and were going to go north then East.

Looks like we will be staying put and seeing what pans out here in WA if McGowan folliws other states and locks down WA.

Guess I should get out and do some kayak fishing in the meantime. Weather is looking good this week .

Been hopeless here trying to buy toilet paper from  Woolies or Coles, effing panic buyers stuffing up up for everyone else.

That sucks about the footy being canned eh!

Now, I must log on and change my super plan to cash, though I don't want to see how much has been wiped off from my modest balance

Sun, 2020-03-22 17:03

Seriously though some hard and quick decisions need to be made. Mcgowan's doing a pretty good job imo I wouldn't wany his job at the moment. People need some sort of certainty and direction, imo lock down should happen sooner rather than later, I think most people are resigned to the inevitabillity of it. But is is a massive call. There's still only around 100 cases in the state so I think our curve is pretty good and closing the borders was a very good call. But I'm certainly no expert just reading what's common sense.

Peed off traveller

Sun, 2020-03-22 18:54

Had a RAC truck pull up out front this arv o, had a Prado full of gear on the back. Spoke to the lady from it, she said they put unleaded in by mistake at Billabong and had to have it towed to Carnarvon to get tank drained. The mechanic doesn't start till 8 tomorrow morning and that gives them 60 hours to be at Darwin airport to fly home to England, that is if the border isn't shut before then.

We had to remove 3/4 of the chairs to work with the 4 sq metre ruling and in the morning out go the rest and tables stacked, take away food  only, which is going to piss a lot of travellers right off

The kybosh needs to be put out on all travel within the state.

For example Betty and Frank ( pick the tv show... ) head north on their annual pilgrimage, Frank doesn't realise that he's been infected by a diesel bowser prior to leaving and falls sick in Coral Bay. Unbeknownst to them the happy hour out the front of Merle and Dave's every afternoon has been the local Petri dish for infectious disease spreading and before you know it all of Coral Bay ( 5000 people in peak season ) are infected. Try treating that at the local nursing post with a grand total of two staff, the shit has hit the fan in a major way and there's just not the resources within the region ( Try all of Western Australia) to cope with a mass outbreak .
Sometimes we've got to make sacrifices in life for not only our benefit but the benefit of all.

Please for the love of God, stay put and stay safe until this has blown over. Your holiday destination will be there next year and the fish should be even bigger...... :D

Ban on all essential travel

Tue, 2020-03-24 12:24

LJ, my understanding on the ban on all essential travel within Australia means that no one can hitch up their boat withn the intention of going fishing and drive to a ramp to launch, solo or otherwise.  You could walk you boat such as a kayak if you live close enough to the coast and beach launch but if you were to launch at a ramp / marina you may not escape the 2 metre exclusion zone.  Simply recreational fishing is not classified as essential travel.

Non-Essential Travel Definition - Guardian Story 22 March

Tue, 2020-03-24 13:03

Interesting viewpoint.

But the definition of non-essential is dependent on individual circumstance, and the government has urged Australians to consider the health of the community’s most vulnerable in deciding whether travel is essential or not.

Exercise ‘common sense’

In his press conference Sunday, the prime minister defined “non-essential travel” as “the sort of travel that would not be normally part of your normal life”.

“Going to the shops is something you have to do, get into work, other important tasks you have to do on a daily basis, but I think Australians can exercise their common sense about things they know are not essential and this is again the point I am making to people: we will give you as many rules and as many guidelines as we can but we need you to think carefully about what you are doing and your behaviour and the impact it has on others.”

The key words here are

Tue, 2020-03-24 14:43

The Prime Minister said:

"... but I think Australians can exercise their common sense about things they know are not essential and this is again the point I am making to people ..."

People who believe that recreational fishing is essential, need to rethink their mindset.

One of the best and simply put messages I have read was by a pandemic expert who said:

"... It's up to us.  What people should do is act as though they have the virus and do not want to pass it to others instead of the I don't want to get it mindset.  Viewed from this perspective I would not have gone to the xyz festival Saturday to avoid infecting my whole community and I would not be driving to xyz on Monday to collect my friends from the airport ..."

An interesting shift in thinking and I can see how it would help. I wonder how many can act on it though?

I where gloves at fuel station . I only fish with 2 people not at same time . Safe as houses . For my wife’s sake due to medical conditions . I sleep outside ( patio) also due to my work. Not to do with my fishing addiction. I isolate .Be full lockdown soon for all of us . Not bad for a flu . What concerns me the most is suicide/ bankruptcy/ only going to get bigger. I honestly feel for those suffering . I also think fishing is safe option

The point many seem to be missing is

Tue, 2020-03-24 22:52

your mindset.  As I mentioned in my earlier post you should be adopting the position that you are COVID-19 positive.  Would you be doing what you may have planned to do tomorrow, the next day or the next if you were.  Fishing trips over the next few months up north with family and oldies.  As an avid fisherman myself I can totally understand the frustration.

I'm 69 this year and plan on living a few more years yet so all I ask is that others show some consideration to others.

True...I'm still trying to get my head around this...1st week working at home and I feel like its doing my head in already.

I need a reality check...pretty lucky to still have a job, family health is all good at this stage.

If this was acted on quicker and people bringing it back to Australia knew the implications it might be different....If it started in in China (December) was declared an international emergency in (January).....then we have had 3 months of travelers returning already.

Hopefully a cure is created soon...As going by international health organisation page there currently is nothing to stop it.

North West Communes

Mon, 2020-03-23 21:55

I was visiting my oldies in a commune south of Broome a few years ago when a severe gastro bug took hold of the place. People were dropping like flys. We left to head North to do the Gibb with the kids in tow only to return 3 weeks later and I came down with it at Broome. Couldn't imagine the carnage if this virus hits the likes of 80 mile or Broome at the peak of Grey nomad season. Will be interesting to see how they handle the people movements, just got back from Exmouth yesterday and still plenty of backpacking vans moving about.

Pretty quiet on the tourist front up here at the moment but this time of year it's still too hot .Doubt if the backpackers that need to work will come here as all the places they would normally work are now shut.

I'm working at the airport at the moment and hearing no more flights from Friday. Will wait and see.

Not at this stage with my 5,7

Tue, 2020-03-24 12:00

Not at this stage with my 5,7 and 10y olds but half the school is now gone. There's the real possibility that I'll soon have to work from home along with the Mrs so we'll have to do that in shifts starting early morning and finishing late nights start if the kids are also home. A good problem to have compared to some at the moment.

My 12 & 10 year old are still at school. Missus is a teacher and I run a landscape yard. Suppose I could have them here but we are flat out selling Vegie mix at the moment, nearly as busy as Spring. People getting jobs ready for lock down.

 Starting to feel the impact

Tue, 2020-03-24 13:55

Starting to feel the impact now, had the rug pulled from under my feet with a fairly decent job going on ice. No new enquiries so will probably run out of work within a fortnight.

You and me both Andy.  was feeling the effects a while ago.

My business now had to let go 5 casuals.

In last 2 weeks we now have X - 60% clients.

I Will probably pull the pin completely before the school holidays.  With Govt grants I may be able to keep the business in hybernation (still paying rent and bills etc) and hope for a startup later in the year.

Hard to loose some good workers wish I could have done some more for them but hopefully have a place for them all at startup later.

Running for 15 years wiped out in two weeks

Would be good if the government would tell us what the plan is to get out of this mess. I dont think they have any clue what they are doing... 2 weeks ago scomo was telling us to he was going to the rugby... then they let alll these infected people enter the country... next minute we are living in a police state.

Doomsday prepping

I might have miscalculated the amount of stored protein in my freezer that I might need. I need more and in my situation it would be safer launching the boat rather then going to the supermarket, got to keep distance from others launching/retreiving. Got fuel/bait going solo and I wont ping anyone :)....
