Couple of questions on Onslow

Q1:  Is it worth filling the boat with fuel before we leave or will the weight cancel out any benefits ?

Q2:  Do I need to take wire for trolling Macks etc. Or is heavy nylon sufficient?

Q3:  Bait for floaters and bottom fishing, collect it in Onslow or buy/catch before I leave?

Take as much as you can......load it in the front of you boat up in the bow to keep the trailer safe for towing.....

Macs = wire

Pick your bait up in Carnarvon unless you have a engel...

Live baits work!!!!!! as do lures.

We fished Threv last year for a week.....think I used bait one day....rest was lures

Definately use wire for

Thu, 2008-06-05 09:53

Definately use wire for mackies. You could probably use suitably high mono, but you're either going to be replacing it regularily or getting a couple of bitoffs. I'd suspect you'd still land some though. I've had it recommended for coral trout too. I have a few different types, but settled on single strand. 88lb, forget the brand, but recommended and used by Ryan (and i'm sure hes done a lot of fishing up there). Get him to show you how to haywire twist it. I had pretty crappy twists until shown his method and its pretty easy to get a good twist.

Got some standard 100lb 7 strand, and some superflexible 7 strand as well. Also some heavier 105lb single strand of a differnt brand.

single strand is the thinnest, then 7 strand is thicker, with 49 thicker still. single can kink more, 49 is more supple (sos my 7 strand but probably not quite as much), stranded wire can fray between teeth, 49 strand has more strands so less susceptible to fraying, etc, etc.

If you can deal with the usage issues single is probably the best from what i've heard.

Bait: hmmm, perhaps take some small whole fish, perhaps some squid. You can catch squid up there which would make the best bait though (tasty too). (not too sure though, listen to people who've done it :p)

Fuel: With incredibly rough numbers: assuming its 30c a liter more up there, and you have 150L on board, its about $50 cheaper here. Say 1500km up by 10L/100km would cost you $250 (petrol). So, 11.8L/100km.

Basically then, its cheaper if adding the fuel to the boat wont increase your fuel consumption by more than 2L/100km driving up there. I have no idea on the base fuel economy of your car, how it is with the boat, etc. If you think of the total weight of the car, the people, the gear, the boat, the trailer, etc. then fuel isnt a very large increase in percentage weight and therefore economy, so, i'd guess that its a bit cheaper filling up beforehand.

Fuel

Thu, 2008-06-05 10:08

The price of fuel is 1.67 in Canarvon (unleaded).   Exmouth 1.84 (unleaded), which I'd assume Onslow would be close too, if not cheaper.

Depending upon the price in Perth, I'd almost drive with the boat empty to Canarvon and fill up with a few 100kms to go.

Personally I'd go less weight for the car to tow and cough up a few extra bucks in the long run.  (depends on what car you drive too compared to your boat though)

when traveling from tom

Thu, 2008-06-05 10:10

when traveling from tom vagas to onslow or exxie i usually try and not have to much fuel in the boat.ive only got a single axle trailer and try to keep the boat as light as possible theres a lot of wildlife out there and more often than not at some stage im on the brakes and gears hard slowing for cows ,emus ,goats .roos .also i just try to keep the weight of the tryes.as a blown trailer trye can realy slow you down especialy if youve only got one spare you certainly dont want to be road side without a spare. i also carry a spare wheel hub and bearing kit as well

as far as wire goes ,if im in trout country and chaseing trout no wire .just heavy llllloooooonnnnggggg leader .with the heavy leader as you know you dont get as many hits but when you do and quite often the trout ,cod, chinaman will bury you into the reef holes or around a bommie etc.the long leader gives you that chance of coming around and pulling the suckers clear .also you loose a lot less lures.
if ya chasing mackies yes wire for sure..

bait. well thats up to you .its usualy not to hard to russle up a few small trevs or queenies in the shallows around any of the islands.mullies are killer bait same with squid but i [we] never realy bother.the unmaned gas platforms are also a good spot to flick around for bait .just upsize ya gear why .youll know why when ya there.
if there home hang on and get the vid camera out
one thing i would suggest is if youve got freezer space as soon as you get to onslow start making block ice.its pricie. if you are buying it go to ashburton fisheries right near the boat ramp .its crushed ice but alot cheaper and also is kept alot colder than the servo ice.a big tub costs about $15 .
you guys are going to have a ball.i wish i was coming along
always in it just the depth that varies

I'm taking up a heap of whiting, gardies and squid for bait.

Cast net for hardies up there would be handy.

Head winds, hills, 2.5 tonne on the back, tinnie on the roof, i dont care. With 650Nm of torque on tap, this trip going to be a dreamCool

nannutara is always dear

never stop there to fill up or get a bite to eat as they like to bite you in the ass with prices. unless your desperate. also when i was in dampier we used heavy nylon for the mackies and never had a problem as we never had wire at the time. just make it as heavy as you can. we also used a inner tube form the bike tyre rigged up so it sling shot teh hooks into theh mouths. good idea worked well 100% hookup rate. bit fiddly but whe you get t done works a treat. we found best bait was to get our own once out there troll he trusty old red and white bibbed lure out the back and pic up small trev or mackie/tuna and that did us nicely every time.

ONSLOW TRIP

Thu, 2008-06-05 18:56

Fellas if you beleive that you cant make it past Nanutarra then please beleive me and carry extra fuel. Tom vegas at the moment is 193.5 per liter for diesel so i would reckon that Nanutarra would be around 220 per liter as they are a bloody rip off. Also as Mitch said get your ice near the boat ramp as they are alot cheaper. Cheers Boozehag

not much more to add there. I got some single strand wire this arvo(No. 9) stainless? Will have to do. So how heavy the mono? 100? or heavier?

Big J do you still need decent amount of lead for fishing the bottom in deeper water? Taking into account tide movements?

Any way we all should manage. Cheers mitch too for the info

Deep

Thu, 2008-06-05 21:10

Haven't fished the deep water yet Max, not really my thing, although I'll get around to it some day I'm sure. Around the islands though a strong tide can require a 3/4 bean to get down to the bottom.

Bring some decent sized jig heads and SP's. Might be anchoring up near a drop off in 10/15 meters and need something to cast out and work back over the edge.

Fri, 2008-06-06 12:29

You can use the jigs as sinkers if you need to :p.

Lots of pelagics to troll some minnows or skirted lures around. Lots of good popper taking fish as well, but then why not do both Laughing

With the wire and coral trout: Talking to a few people- you dont need wire for coral trout, mono is fine. But then mackies can attack it when your trying for trout, so might get a few biteoffs. The single strand I have is pretty small diameter anyways and i'm not taking 100's of lures.

Hi Ya, My younger brother

Sat, 2008-06-07 22:06

Hi Ya,

My younger brother drove up on the long weekend.  Dearest LPG was just over $1 per litre, petrol was $1.9 something (from memory only a few cents under $2) and diesel was well over $2.  He was driving a Ford (poor bloke) 1 tonner towing his boat (14' tinnie) with his camper outfit on the back (it's one of those outfits that opens up usually from the top of a trailer but he built the outfit in the attached links).  Cost him $350 for fuel to  Exmouth.

Obviously not the Ford in the last pic.  The Rodeo has been replaced.

Cheers.
