Coxy to retire
Submitted by Dale on Mon, 2014-07-21 10:50
Speculation is mounting that Coxy is set to announce his retirement today at a press conference called for midday today. If that's the case, let me be the first to say farewell to a true champion of the game, a guy that came from pretty well nowhere and took the game by storm, well done big fella, loved seeing you in purple the day you lost a bet and had to walk down South Terrace in a Freo jumper. Good sport and all round good bloke. Enjoy your retirement.
Cheers
Dale

big coxs over and out! good
big coxs over and out!
good to see he is making the decision for himself rather then being pushed out the door at years end...that big elusive 300 milestone for WC still sits, (good on ya pav for making it in the purple)....coxy you were a solidier and as dale said you took the leauge by storm and was the leagues best ruckmen for years...
you can hold your head up high with multiple AA honours and a premiership medal. Hope ya stick around our club and get us to the light at the end of the tunnel

Yeah we discussed this
Yeah we discussed this yesterday Dale and my thoughts were he would probably retire this year. Another great player and leader for the club hangs his boots.

He is absolute champion
He is absolute champion player and a true gentleman. It looks like he will head into coaching.
On a side note, I remember him from my old Otis Elevator days, he was an electrical apprentice then, hadn't played a game for the Eagles at that stage. He was a tall gangly lanky kid from the bush, quiet but a good guy.

True champion
Keep the team together and his rucking is All Star material. Just a pity he and his mates couldnt keep their language toned down at the boat ramp in Hampton Harbour with lots of Women and kids (some all oogling the legend) listening in. That was my grudge with him when I was in no nice way told after asking them nicely for the sake off the kids etc to tone the language to" Mind your own F-beeb -n business you F-beep -n C-beeeeb -t"
IMO that knocked him down a significant few pegs , but on the football field there hasnt been many better. Unfortunately that is how I will remeber him after he no longer play football. Chris Lewis starred that day by telling them all to tone down, and that impressed me and others.

know him quite well
i know dean and his mum and dad quite well they lived across the road from me in dampier , I dont doht doubt what you said happened but it does seem out of character for him but i have been out to his dads shack a few times with him and he was fine and ran into him at the Perth Cup and he nearly crushed me in a bear hug . Funny you should say Chris Lewis straightened them out i saw the Freo boys getting a bit messy at the mermaid hotel in Dampier 1 arvo and who pulls them into line Derick Kicket seems the aboriginal AFL boys have more more manners than most.(as in AFL players)
i played footy against cameron and clayton lewis (chrises brothers) in the north west both were gentelmen and awsome players that could have both played vfl as it was then , they both went on and played for claremont , played in a loosing GF against the parabadoo saints when cam was playing for them he must have got 60 kicks that day and played every position (even in the ruck and flogged me i just couldnt keep up with him) he didnt even look tired at the end of the game

I havn't been around to see
I havn't been around to see his best times but he has still been a great contributor to the game and has always been a great member of bathe West Coast playing group! Finishing off his career with a best and fairest medal in 2008 and a premiership medal is a great achievement! I hope that you can get the big 300 game milestone!

A special player
who changed up the role of a ruckman - arguably the best modern day one. Did it for the club as much as himself I feel - respect

if dean
if dean cox isnt still in the top 10 ruckman in the AFL i will stand rooting , he has been pushed , so much for club loyalty. he has clashed with simpson i reacon who could only dream of being half the player coxy was and i think feels threatened by coxys position and club

Conspiracy theorist?
Unfortunately father time has come knocking for Coxy. If you think the WC administrators or supporters are happy with their 2014 season I'm pretty sure I know what their answer would be. Do you think they want more of the same? If so, keep playing Coxy.
Coxy has hit the wall and like all loyal club men, is doing the right thing by the club and himself. Better to go still playing half decent footy I reckon.

ok
sandilands yes just because of his size
Krezer , you have to be kidding constantly injured
mummsy , very underateted
Nic Nat , not at patch on coxy
Jamar ok if he was cosistent
cant think of the richmond ruckmans name but on his day i rate him
that still leaves coxy still in the top 10 ruckman
consiracy theory or not but think they wanted the last of the Worsfold era out of the club

We are talking fully fit.
We are talking fully fit. Let's throw in the Richmond ruckman... forget his name, has the mullet. And the Brisbane player lien burger ???? And as a one eyed freo supporter I will throw in clarke but only when he is consistently at the top of his game because his poor form is very ordinary...

I reckon that cox can still
I reckon that cox can still top them. Sandilands is a tall ruckman and he is very hard to beat, but Cox would probably have the advantage with other skills. If u look at dream team points Cox consistently tops most of them by at least 10 points. His season average is about 90 points which is very good. For those people who don't do fantasy 100 points is a very good score. Gary ablest averages about 115 which is the highest in the comp so Cox is still up there. He will still retire a champion IMO.

TI
Best Ruckman, well both myself and Peter Mac have seen probably the best ruckman I've ever seen, could have taken the VFL by storm if he had have gone there, and god knows every club wanted his signature, but he remained in WA and loyal with South Fremantle and dominated.
Cheers

True Champion
Sorry to see him hanging up the boots but the writting was starting to appear on the wall. Not just a good ruckman but very handy forward and back taking a timely mark. Had alot to bare on his shoulders the last few years and stood up to the challenge. Sinclair has signed up for another 2 years lets see if Lycehtt will put pen to paper.

I'm still stunned he made it
I'm still stunned he made it to the AFL let alone where he is today! Having grown up locally in Karratha and playing against Dean and his younger brother Jason (in my opinion a WAY better player than Dean in the junior days, he just wasn't 200cm tall) from under 10's through to under 16's poor old Dampier played any kid they could round up so many i time i had to swap my Falcons jumper for a Sharks jumper, i'd occasionally share the ruck with Dean and watch Jason ran away with the ball otherwise i'd be busy chasing my own team mates from full back. Even in high school he was never really that interested in giving Footy a real shake, up here it just didn't happen, you played for the local club and went into ressies or league and went after a apprenticeship. Though to his credit between the Cox boys, the Bruce brothers and a few other locals like Heathy, Dicko and Fridge they all probably played 3 games a week and kicked the footy every afternoon regardless. I was 10cm shorter than Dean and could take him in the ruck and run him off his feet playing U 16's in the old days and i wasn't even good enough to play League afterwards, and still not!!!
Whatever was the lightbulb moment in his footy career, be it the chace to move to Perth with the royals or the chance to be drafted what a footballer he has become!!! full credit to him for what he has done esspecially seeing where he started from to redefine the role of a ruckman, not just the bloke who taps it to his mids etc but a link up player through the guts to a marking and leading target in the forward line taking contested grabs and converting, man he couldn't run a lap of the oval during Country Week training for school!
I passed him once driving down Scabs beach road, i got word he had brought a Lancer Evolution VIII, i happened to be driving my Evo IX so sure enough i saw this very tall bloke ina small Jap car so i thought i'd catch up and say G'Day, sure enough it was Dean who recognised me trying to chat with the windows down at the next set of lights, cue improptu accelleration test upon the green, Sorry Coxy but maybe next time dial up a few more revs!
