Learnt a valuable lesson today, Crays and chooks in same esky don't mix, sport cans are no match for the spiky cray. A couple of clicks of the tail and they decimate half a block pretty quickly
Do you think that it makes any difference if you you pull your pots early morning vs in the afternoon, with the obvious exception of getting in before the poachers get your pots?
Keeps em alive. Also found when I take esky and ice I come home drunk at 9am. If I was poaching I'd be out at 430am.....
no one poaches as much as people think! I dropped 2 pots on shit country last night and I knew I should have pulled them and re set them. All night I knew there was going to be no Crays in those 2 pots. Even though they were in the same line as my others they were not on the edge..... soooo easy to think they have been poached.
if ya see my pots give me a yell cause I cant find the bastards...Somewhere just south of James service reef...Bloody GPS is rooted...I know I dropped them past 5 Fathom in 17m...spent 3 hours cruising up and across this morning couldn't spot them...Fairly close together with small float before main float...
We pulled our 4 pots for 9 keepers today, no undersized, after a 6 day soak. 2 were empty, they were too far from the reef, we put them out in the big swell Sunday morning and had been a bit over cautious in not wanting them to be pushed under a ledge and get stuck.
Fisheries and water police were hot at bouvards conferscated some poor blokes boat 20mim before I rocked up! Cops have a nice little jet boat they get around in.
It was always in the back of my head to keep going that way. I knew the weather wasn't going to be any good however going with it is a breeze, deckie isn't what he used to be. And 50km of bashing into pure shit would have had me looking for a new crew. Took the pots well north now. Will see what Mandurah has to offer
When you catch crays in October, it would be because it is the tail of the winter reds run. Back when the start was 14 Nov, did you ever catch anything worthwhile on opening day? Did you ever bother? All the intel we ever used to get was that the pros wouldn't catch a thing until the whites started. The run starts south and heads, time-wise, north, ie earlier off Perth, then gets later as you head up. Gero would be later, and last of all, Kalbarri. Very common not to catch worthwhile whites until 12 Dec or so--They'd be going off in Port Gregory long before Kalbarri. With the old arrangements--fixed season and 14 Nov bait-up--Kalbarri would usually have a very good but very brief opening surge, all reds, and cleaned out very quick, down to very little within three days. This was because there was a build-up, last of the winter reds run, catch them and there was nothing left until the whites ran. So we would all pack up and disperse further south, anywhere from Gregory to Dongara, to catch some there before they started at home.
Now, with the pros working all year, the ground doesn't get that rest, so it is more or less pointless putting them out in October up here unless you are happy with just a few crays per pull, if you are lucky. Mine will go in on the 9th, start of an R&R.
I've a mate who is a professional fisherman. Whites start north, Jurien and Cervantes before Metro.
Pro's have a quota system now, they are able to catch crays when the price is best. Red's are generally worth more than whites, hence you dont see too many pro's potting for whites.
A lot of pro's have already got their quota, and the new quota does not come in until mid Jan.
Water temps more likely whats effected the start date. I bagged out last year on the 17th Nov on whites but water was warmer.
At 90 bucks a kilo at a prominent Fremantle fish and chip eatery I say that the price is dam good right now. This may be the reason that there is quite a bit of pot robbing going on even, if selling crays on the black market at half that price that's damn tempting to the stealing (and that is what it is) bastards
Mate, I got my information from being behind the wheel of a crayboat for 26 years, to answer your question. And I am well aware of the current quota system and how it affects the way they work nowadays, as I still have regular contact with working fishermen.
When you dispute the north/south thing, we are talking apples and oranges. Everything south of the line between B and C zones is south to us up here, we made no distinction between Cervantes and Mandurah. . As I said, they start south much earlier than they do north. And Kalbarri is the last place of all to fire. They'd start at Leeman before Dongara, Dongara before Gero, Gero before Gregory, Lucky bay before Kalbarri. And I was making this point to try to show the relationship between the end of the reds run and the start of the whites, with the lull inbetween when the whites are down to moult. So why do ALL crays go very quiet during this period, and not just the ones in their whites phase? After all, crays are only believed to do the whites phase once in their lifespan, at first maturity. Our best answer on that would be that the larger reds also tend to have a moult around the same time--as well, the greatly diminished competition for food means that the few crays that are actively feeding just don't need to go into a pot.
A mate of mine who used to fish commercially from Mandurah to awedge reckons in that area Two Rocks is the place where the whites run first.
Have only been out for 3 dives this season for a few good feeds. Reading all the reports on here and stalkbook the last week at work cant go quick enough
When ya back to work Bryce? I got about 16 days, 15 & 1/2 hours till I get home for break. Kinda hoping there gonna be a few hanging around still ready for a chrissy fed at least.

Killing it bryce , just goes to show about hard and fast rules of nature and fishing , there their to be broken.
Anyone got a handle on what sort of a year they are predicting , and for all the divers out there , any more on Bretts
