cuttlefish galore

Took the boat out solo from two rocks yesterday, what a awesome day on the water, not alot fish wise for me, keep a few for a feed, but damn got plagued by cuttlefish and occys, and some big cuttlefish too, never seen so many.

Sitting back at work atm having some fresh cuttlefish and what can i say, mmmmmmmmmmm better than squid anyday for me

I was out yesterday as well

Mon, 2009-06-15 13:21

I was out yesterday as well and jigged up a small undersized dhuie. As I got it near the surface, I saw a red shadow under it and thought I had the dhuie on one hook, and a sargeant baker on ther other. Then the shadow moved off, rose, came back the dhuie, opened its tentacles and latched onto the dhuie. Massive cuttlefish, took 3 gaff shots to get it on the boat. Must of been several kilos. The boat got absolutely drenched in ink too (there was even ink stains on the roof). The dhuie had a chunk missing off his head from the cuttly, but after getting the water through his gills, he swam off strong.

Haha, I pulled it up from the deep, not on the boat :p. Skipper wanted to keep it and did the gaffing and made the mistake of lifting it with head facing the boat. I inadvertantly managed to shield the boat from a lot of ink though, lol. I gave the boat a washdown as the skipper was putting the cuttly in the bucket, but we missed a small bit on the roof :p.

went out last week on sun n mon.

got 3 cuttles and an occy on sun then 3 occies and a cuttle on mon.

couldnt beleive the occies stayed on the hook in 34 meters of water first time ive every caught occies out deep on hooks before.

never keep the cuttles cause they have too much ink and theres too much wastage. sometimes i cut the 2 big tenticles of 4 bait and let them go, seems like a fair sacrafice!

Cuttle

Cuttle fish is great bait...yesterday we  caught all our fish on skinned cuttlefish tenticles. The fleshy bits right up the top were the best!

Cleaning

Mon, 2009-06-15 14:27

i've caught and cleaned plenty of squid but never a cuttlefish - how do you clean them? Saw a big one floating near the Lena dive wreck on Saturday when out with Damo - i t was floating on the surface head up and looked very fresh - possibly alive - should have grabbed it for bait.

basically

Mon, 2009-06-15 14:49

Basically like cleaning a squid mate. You eat the belly flap. Just cut it out, remove skin and cook him up. Then cut its head off and put in freezer for bait for next trip!

No point letting them go if you cut off tentacles

Mon, 2009-06-15 19:55

Train, there is no point letting them go if you cut off the 2 big tentacles - they are what they use to catch their prey.  You are just condemning them to a slow death through starvation.  Either let them go unharmed, or keep them.
