Cuttlefish vs dhu

Well this was a first. Had a take on the jig on Friday and couldn't quite work out what is was. Thinking maybe big dhu with big tail beats. Somewhat disappointed when up came a 350 dhu with a huge cuttlefish engulfing it. Amazing sight and huge cuttlefish. Poor dhu was very much under the weather with a rather large hole in its head! Cuttlefish let go at the top and very unwell dhu went down on the release weight probably to be finished off by his friend!

Similar thing happened

Similar thing happened yesterday out from Mandurah

Hooked into something heaving with a few strange headshakes and was thinking sized dhu

Looking over the side I could see Strange orange/red stripes and took me a few moments to realise it was a big cuttlefish latched onto a barely sized Blackass

As it came to the surface it realised it was in trouble and shot water at us and took off back to the depths

 Speak to gilly....

Seems to be quite a few cuttlefish hanging around normal dhu country.

Cuttlefish come inshore this time of year to breed

And they aren't averse to grabbing an easy meal-I've had them attack speared fish.

I can't kill a cuttlefish for some reason. Seem too intelligent to kill maybe. Awesome sight though!

Heaps of Cuttlefish every where we went yesterday.

Strangest thing though was watching an Eagle Ray follow my hooked Snapper right to the boat, and then sit there and watch me boat it, never seen that before.

Can't be bothered with squid, but cuttlefish--cut into long strips, pound with meant tenderiser, egg and breadcrumb, dirizzle with lemon juice-delicious! used to catcch them in craypots heading into winter, some went back, some didn't.

Same thing happened over the weekend.

Caught a squid on jig again in thet 30's.

Then my mate jigged up something with strange pulsating movement which he said was a cuttlefish. Unfortunately the hook pulled.

Straight after that the cuttle went for my jig and stay hooked! As I was using double (head + tail) twin assist on my slow fall jig, he was well and truely hooked and I landed him.

Will post the photo tonight.

On Sunday, my mate hooked up

On Sunday, my mate hooked up to a fish off Mandurah and the thing seemed to be swimming straight up at the boat. When he got it to the boat, it was a black ass getting chased up by a large cuttlefish, we let the black ass sit in the water and then the cuttle fish swam up to grab the fish we netted it. Went on to use it for bait and caught a nice snapper to go along with a few Dhueys and the couple of black ass. Perfect conditions out there on Sunday!
