Outboard recommendations

I have a 20 year old 4.4 mtr bay hunter with a 40 HP 2 stroke mercury. Hull is very good & i want to keep it  but the outboard has a couple of problems that will be expensive to fix. So Im starting to think about getting a new one. I would apprecitate some recommendations. 4 stroke i suppose - are they still a lot heavier than 2 strokes? 40 HP is about right. No point in a more powerful motor because most of the time I cant go flat out any way with the 40.

A 40hp yamaha 2 stroke is

A 40hp yamaha 2 stroke is about 90kgs and a 4 stroke is about 100kgs.

Have a look at the 2 stroke 40hp tohatsu at about 70kgs that would be my pick for sure. Awesome weight ssving for a boat that size. My old 70hp tohatsu had 1200+ hrs of rough treatment and was still going solid when i sold it. And i have a new 9.8hp no and really rate it !!

Hi Vinny. Based on your experiences with Tohatsu, what do you think of their TLDI 2 strokes?

I am no authority on Tohatsu's haha.

I just had a quick look at them and for example a 40hp stroke is 72kgs. the TLDI is 94kgs which takes away the appeal of buying a 2 stroke. 20kgs on a small boat is a lot of extra weight. may aswell go a 4 stroke i think ! In terms of reliability and stuff like that with the TLDI i have no idea, never even seen one. Just the 2 standard 2 stroke are a oldschool nothing fancy motor.

If i was going with the extra weight i would still go yamaha/suzuki.

Hey mate I purchased a new TLDI 50hp tohatsu for my previous boat about 3 years ago... I loved it and I to rate tohatsus highly...  with the TLDI there were less fumes than with a normal 2smoker and it was somewhat quieter and way more fuel efficient... I think I paid $7,200 fitted... I now have another boat with a 40hp four stroke and would defiantly recommend getting a 4stroke (mines a 2013 merc) less noise uses next to no fuel - most I've spent for a day out would be $20 and that's covering some kms! I have a 4.5m quintrex fishseeker and the 40 merc pushes a full boat (2 big guys & fishing gear) 50km flat out..

TLDI

I bought a boat with a Tohatsu TLDI on it last year, a few weeks later the 3rd piston injector stopped working and cooked the piston. I will never buy Tohatsu again.

That being said, it was apparently one of the first case's of a ruined tohatsu in WA...

Have had both Tohatsu and yamaha outboards, both 2 strokes and have to say both engines have

performed really  well. I chose the 2 stroke because I couldn't justifying spending the extra on a four stroke on an older boat.

Its not a 4 cylinder 40hp

Mon, 2015-06-01 21:18

Its not a 4 cylinder 40hp merc is it? Mine could do with a new steering arm if yours is getting binned...

As far as outboards go i'd say suzuki, yamaha or mercury 4 stroke depending on which one you get the best deal on. Does the 4.4m have a transom pod? If so i would have thought that the extra 20kgs would be negligible (however i'd say im still pretty green to boating). Also might be worth checking the max HP and checking wether or not you can go an extra 10hp as 4 strokes deliver power differently to a 2 stroke, and with some manufacturers its no increase in weight between certain HP's.

My opinion only

Pod

Tue, 2015-06-02 10:12

Hopefully i can get some $$$ for the existing motor & not bin it. It works fine but appearently theres a problem accessing the water pump. Nothing wrong with the pump as far as i know - just that a cover is seized or some such thing & will be a cost to getting it off.  Im no mechanic & always feel that im getting screwed. Any way as i said the motor is 20 years old so maybe time to upgrade.

Yes - the boat has a pod so the total length of the boat is about 4.7 mtr

I think the specs do allow for more hp but the little boat gets bashed about in the chop at speed so not sure that i could take advantage of extra hp

Etec

Have a look at the Etec range, quiet, fuel efficient and not many servicing worries.
I have a 60hp and would buy another tomorrow. We bought a 25hp one for our sea rescue creek boat and it goes like a dream
