Dampier Billfish Shoot Out. Champion Team!!!
Hi all we entered in the shoot out earlier in the week i thought i might share my story! this was our first comp and we had some tough competition. i think there was over 50 boats entered
Day1: We got up super early and we were out at the ships ready go by 6. Conditions were looking not to bad. we had our livies out all morning with little action till about 10 and we tagged and relised our first black (about 40kg) Then after lunch we moved to a new spot and sent the livies out as the boys were sending out the third rod all hell broke loose all 3 rods went off, triple hook up! I jump out of my seat to grab the third rod which had a black on it. the other 2 boys were tangled together and also around the outrigger. chris's fish got off and they got the lines clear and when chris wound his line in a saily chased it all the way to the boat then smashed it less then a metre from the boat! so we had 2 blacks and a saily hooked up so i was driving the boat as well as trying to hang on to a rod with the other hand and eventually my fish got off and we tagged and relised the black and the saily. 1 hour later we hooked another sail fish which managed to bust us off (10kg line comp). We finished day1 in top spot with 2500points and a 1500 point lead!! only 10 fish caught for the day
Day2: Should of stayed in bed! We were out on the water super early again with a real sore head after alot of celebrating the previous night. conditions were absolutly shocking with big winds and big swells. after about 5 hours we had seen one black and the boat fishing close to us hooked and lost a black and we thought a hot shower and a pub feed was a good idea. so after a long ride in at 10knots in a 26foot boat just as we got close to nelson rocks my engine alarms went off and turned out my kill tank pump and broke off allowing all the water coming over on to the deck to flood my bilge and then my bilge pump failed then my oil tanked tipped upside down and fried the motor, and just to top it off a wire snapped off a circuit breaker and killed all my electrics GREAT! So we managed to get enough life out of the motor to prevent drifting in to the rocks and got to the saftey of a bay and tied off to a mooring. i managed to use my jumper pack to pump the water out and make a radio call and we got picked up my another boat and taken back to base. Only 4 fish caught for the day we still are holding a 1500point lead
Day 3: Conditions are evan worse and we are unable to tow the boat in with my friends boat so it was pretty tense day sitting round wondering if my boats alright and also wondering if anyone was going to take our lead off us. Im not 100% sure but i think there was only 6 fish tagged maybe more and one boat come very close to taking it out but luck was on our side and we won! Champion Team 2012 The Wolf Pack!
Day4 Conditions probably evan worse again so ill made the call to sea rescue and we left just after lunch and finally got the boat in at 8.30 that night. Thanks alot to West Pilbara Sea Rescue those guys were legends. I have now offered my services as a volunteer for the sea rescue team (if they will have me) probably the least i can do.
Cheers Pricey

Nice
Always great to come up trumps in a tournament. Congrats on the win. Unfortunately for me, not really but anyway, I always seem to catch 'points' fish outside of tournaments. I've caught a solid saily, a 80kg marlin and a 30 kg yellowfin this year and then on Wednesday just gone I caught a 150kg marlin..... Bloody hell, at least I'm catching something I guess.
A bit of good unfortune with you boat if you focus on the positive, it could have ended up a whole lot worse for you there.
A tournament win will keep you coming back, they are bloody addictive.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

well done Pricey
I was so glad I wasnt out there, but comps arent my cup of tea. However to win with that story is awesome. Heard from a few at work about your exploits and was pretty impressed.
Went for a fish Friday arvo-night and it was glass, just couldnt hold it together for the comp. Gave sat, Sun, Mon a miss as the weather was Crapola. Even this weekend looks sus.
Adam the time will come Mate, otherwise bash out, find a lea and squid. They are in now, but numbers will increase.

i think the squid caught by
i think the squid caught by the comp boats outnumbered the billfish 2 to 1, i forgot the squid jigs so ruled that one out and the knife jigs too

Well done lads
Congrates Lads was hard work over the 3 days alot of bait but not to many fish.
Did see something different on the last day poor sailfish get smashed by a group of Pilot whales, they played with it for about half an hour then 2 of them just smashed it.

cheers guys
Cheers guys! hey Brucesta we all got a medal each to keep with our names engraved in it and we gonna get the "billfish shoot 2012" winning badge and it fits in the steering wheel of you boat which is pretty cool.
Apparently having your name on that trophy is a curse! noone has taking out the comp twice and from talking to couple of peolpe that have won it before the following year was quite far from a win. fingers crossed!
Brad S i heard about those pilot whles that pretty out there isnt it I thought sailys were the fastest fish in ocean??
