A Day in the Deep
Plans had been made for a day in the deep on Easter Monday. Four of us including Eric, Jeffrey, Greg and myself on Eric1’s Grady White and another three on Wangler’s boat. Conditions couldn’t have been better as we headed out from the Ocean Reef ramp. 60 odd kms later we locate some fish in I think around 270m of water. First runs on the board was to Wangler’s boat with a gemfish. Jeffrey then stood up to the plate and scored a nice grey band cod.
I followed soon after
And then another solid fish that gave me a good work out. In fact I think it almost won.
The end result. Fish was taken on a 500g Power Jig.
Greg added to the score.
And Jeffrey topped the day off with a double header.
Eric added a nice pinky and we had bagged out. Lots of green eyed sharks during the day and a few nannygai. Wangler’s crew also bagged out so a great day was had by all. Thanks to Eric and Wangler and company for a top day. No day would be complete without a last pic of Jeffrey on the way home.

They work good Tony
The Power Jig Diamond Eye scored my largest grey band although I might add it was foul hooked just behind the pectoral fin. I lost one to the bottom and Jeffrey lost the other to a good fish when the 300lb leader cut through about half way up on a good fish that we had called for another grey band. Time to reload with another order I guess.

I'm really loathe to lengthen
I'm really loathe to lengthen the hooks on mine because of snaggy bottoms.
300lb leader cut thru? Sounds like gill plates!

Gill plates
We thought maybe the same thing. The last 200mm of the leader was quite scarred which gave you the impression that the whole jig had been injested rather than cut off on the gill plates. I struggle with a grey band cutting a 300lb leader with anything other than gill plates though.

I think I'll try circles
or recurve hooks on a longer assist with the next order. This may lessen the possibility of snags. In 250m+ of water I'm not convinced the don't strike principle with circle hooks applies considering the bow in the line due to current.

A Day in the Deep
Great Post Alan
3 things to add
Great crew to have had on the boat
Unbelievable conditions
Great catch
Like Wangler, I have now revised my best eating fish list with Gray Band taking over the top spot from Dhu Fish. Just had 10 people over for a family dinner including Dhu and Gray Band and all agreed that the Gray Band was fantastic
Looking forward to going out with all of you again soon

i was out from o/reef in the 60-70mts catching dhuys and i heard you guys chatting on the radio, at one stage someone had to tell you to give it a rest, bit of jealousy i thought...ha ha ha
if it wasnt for the nice dhu i got i would of told yah's as well.
how was the fog hey???
we left in dark and had 4+ boats waiting on the lead and they jumped in behind me to follow us out, with the fog the lead lights dissapeard within 200mtrs.
i save a way point on the end of the lead...easier to come back to as well, but i have a mapping gps so its all steer by gps anyhow.
great feed boys, in magic cond, what more could you want??
cheers

But is it a Gemfish?
I think it maybe one of these:
Black Snoek Thyrsitoides marleyi

This is what Buz
was thinking. I still ate some, and didn't have the 'runs' so I know it wasn't an oil fish.....

not too bad, lots of
big bones that run all the way along the body, and harder to fillet. I'll use the next one for bait or put it back

Barracouta
Alan asked me to have a look at the 'gemfish' and see if i can help.
I think it is a Barracouta Thyrsites atun. I would be much more confident if the photo was higher resolution, but am still almost certain. Snake Mackerel Gempylus serpens are much longer and thinner than that. Gemfish (Rexea species) are much stockier fish and have only 2 finlets before the caudal (tail) fin. It looks like 6 in the photo. The Black Snoek Thyrsitoides marleyi has no finlets, rather, they are connected by fin membrane (like normal fins) and has two lateral lines. Again, I think I can only see one lateral line in the photo.
The Barracouta and the snoek are very similar fish. If you are interested, the latin oides means 'similar' or 'like', so the genus name of the snoek literally translates to Thyrsites-like (ie Barracouta-like).
Great haul by the way - looks like a fun day out. I didn't get to wet a line at all over easter...

Thanks Glenn
So if the 8th pic from the top is a Barracouta Thyrsites atun, what are these?
and is the fish below the same?
Thanks for your time Glenn. It's great to have you on this website.

making it hard!
Talk about throwing down the challenge!
OK, the first two are actually the Black Snoek Thyrsoides marleyi. I can't see the lateral lines, but the second dorsal and anal fins appear to have full membranes rather than separate finlets. But in those photos, the size of the ventral fin (the big white ones under the pectoral fins) are a give away. The ventral fins of the Barracouta are much shorter (1/3 to 1/2 the length) than the pectoral fins.
The last one is more difficult. You can't see the lateral lines or the ventral fin, but it looks like separate finlets before the tail, so I'm putting my money on Barracouta. But, I wouldn't put the house on it based on that photo!
Also note that the membrane of the dorsal fin of the snoek is not solid black (can see in the first photo) whereas in the Barracouta it is.
How's that?

It's a Daiwa Interline
I don't think they make this model or the other model I have anymore. The one in the pic is 5'6", it's rated as a 50-80lb stick and it has heaps of grunt. The other I have is the 6'6" version which is rated as a 20-50lb and I just love the action of both of them.

Great fish guys
Also great to see some non-electric reels in use :-)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
