Day out 24/3

Well, for the first time today went for a troll, with the idea to troll on the way out to Rotto and see what happened. Well had two lures out on deep diver 3-5m laser pro and one pink chrome 2-3m. so we figured we had no hope( wife, me and 2 kidz) so out we went and plodded around, the wife clearing the weed of the lures and me trying to explain how, when , what and all sorts to her( she tries, lol).

The deep diver was less troubled then the shallower lure and about 15-20min in to our surprise a solid hook up. Man couldn't wipe the smile from my face, it was running like a train and we turned towards it(cause the crap outfits we have...) allowing me to recover some line, up close and I got the wife to switch of the moter cause we were in a good possie, another good run and then the fish went deep. Pump and wind pump and wind up she came with anothre couple of short runs( I had the drag on a bit by now). Only say 10mins into it, and it came up on the rear of the boat. Now my poor wife had been running around, she had reeled in the other lure(as to plan) and then because we were getting smashed by the fish, grabbed the helm and did the driving. So the fish showed some colour and WOW it was a beaut Spanish Mack, nice size too big sucker. But as I said came up on the Starboard side.

Now i was panicked and started screaming to the wife, Clear the rod, clear the rod, making my way over to that side the fish took off, straight under the boat (yep new it would) but what I didnt know is that the wife had unfortunately tangeled the lure on the rear clip and was trying to free it when the Mackie surface. So no matter how much I screamed in the end it didnt matter, I couldn't get the tip of my rod down to clear the bottom of the boat and all that because I couldn't get over Starboard and into the corner. "Twang" one lovely Mackie gone. One Pissed of Fisher still here.

Trolled a littel more but no luck.

Did some bottom bashing and picked up a foxfish, are they good eating??

Then did some squidding for fresh bait with the girls squidding and me relaxing 6 good squid and a cuttlefish.

Then set up for a dusk fish and just before sunset my wife pulled in anothe nice Gummy( her 2nd in 3 weeks) pics attached.

Well all in all a great day, but a Mackie is one of those fish that is top of my list and has been for years, boat owner now for 6 months and first troll so hopefully it wont be years until I land one.

Cheer and By the way, great conditions after lunch man best i have seen for ages.

Thanks, I seem to always loose that prized fish. And yeah, the females always come through with a feed.

Still sounds like a productive day, spewin about the mack, its the memory of the one that got away that will have you back on the horse and out there again and again and again.

She is crap at driving anyway

Mon, 2012-03-26 14:36

She is crap at driving anyway Webby, so i would never get a spot. Saying that it was her rod on her side that went off, but she wanted me to get my first Mackie. Pity she had the other rod ready to send the lure out and had quite a bit of line out, enough for it to tangle the bottom of the boat on the clip in the rear. But the with the strike it all happened so quick and I asked her to chase the fish.

The rest is history. But yeah I like to remind her that even with the Gummy, that if not for hubby she wouldn't have a chance of getting it into the boat. Could be wrong.

Tough skipper alright mate, when her and my daughter were squidding, they had me working so hard I was sweating like a pig. Fishing is relaxing for them all work for me :)

Wouldn't change a thing,lol

Life's a learning experience so they say. Maybe a little bit of expectation management/quick little run through of what to do if 'this' happens and it'll go smoother next time. Looking at your pic; you ain't got too much to complain about.

Should of put the foxfish back

Mon, 2012-03-26 14:27

Only regret for the day was that i took the Foxfish, lovely eating and all but wasn't aware of how slow the grew. So prob wont take another one.

Thanks for the feedback, I know from reading all your posts that some fish get away, but damn it I still hate it when it happens. Cant wait to get out there again and have a troll.

Say gday if you recognise the boat, be nice to see others out there, :)
