deckies

i notice that a lot of blokes on here offer themselves as a deckie or people offer a spare spot on a boat but they all say normal deckie rules apply. being that iam interested in taking up an offfer one of these days just wondering what these certain rules are and what is the normal split for fuel and so on.

thanks in advance hope to catch a fish with some of you blokes one day

Mate it usually means that you pay for your share of fuel used that day and chip in for bait used if any. Then just helping with the general daily duties like launching and retrieving and cleaning at the end of the day. Just basic common sense really.

As a skipper, usually just expect the deckie to help wash the boat, pull the sea anchor and chip in for fuel on longer trips.

Deckies who bring snacks and beer get invited back........

No navionics or sneaky gps units lol!!!

All of the above plus some bags of ice don't go astray for the esky mate, sometimes I have ice made up good to but sometimes I don't & certainly want to make sure the catch is kept top notch fo us.

Also don't be afraid to ask questions etc.

The key point is be useful, don't stand around like its a charter, its not.

If you can reverse, don't let the skipper back the car in, if you can't, try and do the winching or clips so he can stay in the car.

Don;t be last to line out all the time.

Oh and don't be late!

Listen to Till....he is a great deckie and goes out of his way to help the skipper during the day.

My number one hate as a skipper is having to ask and then wait for the deckies to pull there lines up so you can reset thre drift. When the skipper pulls up, deckies should pull up. Poor old skipper is usually last in and first up, but with a good deckie, he already has your jig rigged up as your trying to get the boat on the spot and has the sea anchor in as yor starting the engine. u

Scottland, bait and jigs dont

Sat, 2012-01-28 21:25

Scottland, bait and jigs dont mix that well unfortnately. The action of jigs tends to result in lots of tangles with paternoster rigs. When jigging, each jigger tends to keep his jig out of sync with the others so there is no chance of tangles, takes a bit of time but works well when the crew has fished together a bit. Also, jigging tends to rely on accuratrely dropping the jigs onto fish and hence much shorter drifts than wtih bait, and jigs lend themseld to this as it is much quicker to retrieve and reset the drift.

I took a newbie jigger out today (although he was a very experienced game fisho) and he had a ball. I am now going to hit him up for a bait only day on his boat, as variety is the spice of life, and after a long hard and relatively fruitless day demersal jigging, a day dragging baits will be fun!

Bait

One should ask how the skipper likes the bait cut up and when you do it don't just cut up enough for you, there are others in the boat fishing as well.
