Deep water bouys. What are they???
Submitted by southcity104 on Sun, 2010-01-10 19:07
Wednesday last week we came across anchored bouys close to the 200 meter contour line south west of garden island. We saw at least 6 positoned 2 by 2. On one bouy it was marked (B100 millenium)
Does anyone know what these are??

Cray pots
Most of the boats are getting out towards deep water for crays now.Seems like one has added the big inflatable to stop the floats going under with the tide.
Nothing worse than travel 30 odd miles out and find your floats are all underwater, hang round for an hour or so and if they haven't surfaced drive all the way back home

They were HUGE and seemed to
They were HUGE and seemed to be tied across each other below the water, like a H, I really don;t think crays and no whip antenna either. There was a very spread out string, but a lot further ap[art than cray pots ever seem to be.

Distance
You have to set them further apart than normal because when the tide/current changes you have heaps of rope floating loose on the surface and if they are set too close it equals a massive tangle. There is something like 3 times the depth of rope per pot---something like 500-600 metres of rope

Crays
Could be craypots. There has been craypots out in the deep lately.
They were in around 160m not long ago.

B100 is a licence number and Mellinium is the name of a Boat. Used to be a cray boat in Cervantes but pretty sure recently sold, not sure what its used for now. More than likley cray pots though.

Oh the other reason I didn't
Oh the other reason I didn't think they were craypots, is that they had barnacle growing onthe ropes. They would have to be out awhile for that!
The spacing in the line was about 1km between floats too.

Deep
Not deep enough for deep sea crabs, they catch them in around 150-200 fathoms not metres

champagne!
The close in gear thats in the water atm is for targetting champagne (spiney) deepsea crabs. They're caught in the shallows of the deepwater shelf ie generally 200m plus and they're using slatty crapots!
