Denham/Steep point passage

Hey Guys, looking at doing a trip to Denham in the last week of April, this will be our first trip up there , we have fished Exmouth, Gnaraloo and Carnarvon many times but we thought we would give Shark Bay a go. I have found a fair bit of info regarding fishing inside the gulf etc but what I would like to know is is the South passage at Steep point easily accesible? we have a 7.5m fibreglass boat so we are planning on crossing the gulf from Denham and fishing on the western side of Dirk Hartog etc, in particular for Mackies and maybe come reds, any advice or opinions would be great

Thanks Guys

You won't have any trouble with the south passage as long as you keep between the channel markers

Hope I'm not highjacking the thread but do you guys have any info on what weather conditions are good for heading out the passage? Or more importantly what conditions would make you stay in the bay?

I'm heading over to Shelter Bay on the 23rd April, returning on the 29th April, with blokes from the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club. We have 4 boats and 16 guys/gals going.
I have a bunch of waypoints to help you get from Denham to Shelter Bay if you want them. It's 26nm, and there is a bit of shallow water to negotiate, so it helps to go the right way.
Swell is the only real issue going over the fault line, otherwise it's just like anywhere else...head out into the open ocean within the limitations of your experience and boat.

Might see you out there, we will be in Exmouth from 24-1st May and then spending 1 week in Denham. As others have said if you stick within the channel markers you should be ok. I've only fished out of the west side once and we did well.

We we are planning on staying at shelter bay for a couple nights, and possibly north end of dirk for couple nights

if the wind and tide are running in different direction crossing the main channel between the Denham outer marker and the start of the channel across the prongs, sea can get quite steep, and you wil be beam on. Think run-in tide and fresh SE or S wind, or run out and NE. Other than that, as they said, stick to the markers. Gotten very easy nowadays with the middle channel marked and everything on your plotter. Enjoy.
