Destroyed a Saltiga drag cap (Video)

Recently returned from a trip from steep point, had a fun time catching sharks off the beach till.....

The spool is a studio ocean mark, even after putting another saltiga spool back on the drag still feels terrible. taking a closer look at the drag cap reveals that its had parts of it carved out.
has anyone else heard of this?

probably my fault for continually tightening the drag. Shark was a suspected 3m whaler we'd see earlier that night.

What were the specs of your line and rod?  That is some serious drag pulling going on there!

The older model saltiga (no magseal) 6000 with a 6500 size SOM spool. By no means do I blame the gear for failing.

The correct gear to catch these beasts is 50m of towing rope and a hook bigger than a gaff tied to a billboard post as we found out...

Yes, have seen this before

Yes, have seen this before with a smallish black marlin doing the damage. The drag knob has numerous plastic parts which simply melt. The solution was an SOM spool and a matching SOM drag knob. I am not sure whether SOM still make the drag knobs or not. The other alternative is an RCS custom knob made by Daiwa themselves called a "Radiation Drag Knob". It is entirely of metal construction. (again not listed in the 2012 catalogue). The only issue with this knob is that the heavier drag settings come very strongly with the last turn of the drag knob.

Good luck

Les
