Dhufish frames
G'day all you fishermen that target DHUIES , the new RAP newsletter is asking for frames from DHUFISH for research purposes , if you can it would be apreciated if you save the frames after filleting your fish and either dropping them off at a colection point or even save a few up in your freezer and give the people involved a call and they will collect them from your place .
I DO NOT target Dhuies and will never deliberately kill one so I can not help their research but you guys that go out and nail a few could you drop them off.
contact R.A P (Research Angler Program)9203 0111 or call in to the fisheries Lab at Hillaries ( 39 Northside drive, Hillaries boat harbour) and they will help you out ( I think all the Bluewater Tackle stores are receival points for frames ) you can take the fillets off etc they mainly need the heads , if you contact them they will give you the full goss on it but PLEASE try to help out .
thats all this NOB has got to say .
BYE.

I see so many people posting pics of their Dhuies and no mention of handing in the frames , it all goes to help understand the humble DHUIE .

This is for a good cause, I will sticky this thread for future notice.
Cmon fellas, if you have dhuie backbones or heads that you catch over the Chrissie/New Years break, hold onto them and give the research fellas a hand.

Will ring them again on the 2nd. My freezer is still holding the frames so I am sure they can wait until the new year.

Thanks
Thanks to all that respond, to those that take the pi$$ ( not on this site ), get a brain , these fish are slow growwing and resident fish , I'm sure you wouldn't want fisheries to go out to your favorite spot , send down a diver or 2 and take a heap of fish for research and only use the otiliths and chuck the rest away .
IF you hand the frames in ( you can get hats, stubbie holders or just a warm fuzzy feeling for doing something for the fishery) then the researchers don't have to spend time out there chasing them and more time researching them.

No Just saving them up for the scientists
It is a fallacy to think that I catch heaps Sherbert, because I don;t really. I just happen to capture those rare events on camera whenever I can. Looks good, but there are days when we don;t get Dhuies I can assure you. That's why I go out to chase quality table fish like Harlequin.
Unfortunately Dhuies won;t be around too much longer if we keep catching them at the rate we currently do pro and rec alike. I'm all for reducing the limit to one fish per boat, never mind per angler. Maybe with a few more frames the scientists will get a better understanding of this icon of our local waters and help come up with some ideas on how to keep them around long into the future.
Perhaps I may need to change my first fish on board rule to first Dhuie onboard has to go back in 07'. That'll stir a few new deckies up eh Adam. That big baldy you released that day must be even bigger now. I'll have to try and remember which spot it came from so we can go back and get it for you.... too many spots, didn't rename it, unlike the F'Wreck spot which was previously known as spot 126 or something like that.

Dhufish frames from the metro area (Mandurah to Lancelin) are DESPERATELY needed by researchers in the west coast demersal finfish section.
Incentives such as T-shirts or caps are on offer to any angler willing to donate frames( frames can be returned to you if you like) also if you want to keep the frames for cray bait then they will swop you cray bait for your frames .

Thanks guys
all they want out of them are the otiliths and an approx of where and when they were caught if possible , you can have them back once the otiliths are removed they could possibly do it while frozen (I'm not sure about this tho), they are that desperate to get hold of them .

dhu frames
its not just dhu frames that the fisheries are after.
pink snapper frames are also needed .
gibbsy most tackle shops down here (busso) will take them and pass them on.
if they refuse ask your self if they really care about the fish and gear that they sell ?

Frames still needed
Nick from fisheries called in to my place this morning and I offloaded 5 Dhuie frames plus a few other fish frames to him. He says they have received quite a few in the last few weeks but still need more. They are specifically after Dhufish and Snapper frames but will take Breaksea, Harlequin and others. There isn't a specific study being done on those fish as yet but they are gathering data in readiness.
It all helps to understand and manage these icon species. I picked up a nice hat for my trouble and Nick also gave me some strong specimen bags to put future frames in (complete with labels etc).
I strongly urge anyone out there to join in with the research as this will help to ensure your kids and their kids can experience the thrill of landing a big dhuie one day.
Cheers

Good onya
Good onya Andy. I didn't realise they needed other species frames as well, now that I know that I will hold onto them. Every part of the dhufish except the guts is consumed at our place - head to soup, backbone n wings to bbq, and the fillets - well. ;) For those of you who don't eat all of your dhufish or have snapper/breaksea/harlequin frames, freeze them down and give the fisheries guys a call and help them help us.

Good on you Andy
Nic said he came back from leave to a full freezer :)...and had received a few calls....he was stoked.
They are particularly interested in fresh frames....if you get in early and live close to Hillarys...give them a call....
as the boys said earlier in the post...there is a few caps and T-shirts on offer to show your support to other anglers....
If you are really into helping out become a "log booker"...The research angler logbooks are great for storing your fishing dairy entrys and helps out the researchers as well....
as Mav said you get a seasonally newsletter with up to date research results, fish facts and just general interesting info ...

*****IMPORTANT*****Frames update******
Guys,
Nick and Ian called around this morning to pick up another 3 frames from my place. We had a bit more of a chat about the Dhuie research going on at the moment.
Currently they are desparate for frames as they need to reach 300 frames in a calender year (July - June) for the study to be statistically viable. Right now they are only at 120 frames so they are absolutely desparate for more people to get involved.
This is serious business guys.... every frame counts.
Without your support the study will potentially be invalid and the dhuie will be in big big trouble without the management data that is being collected right now so we can take the necessary steps to protect this iconic species.
March and April are traditionally good Dhuie months so if you get one PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact the guys and make arrangements to get the frames to them.
Lets see how many fishwrecked members can donate to the cause.
The tally currently stands at 10 from me and my deckies. Anyone else donated some?
If so lets get a tally going and try and get 50 between us by June.
Here is the list, add your name and tally so we can keep a record.
Andy Mac: 6
Shamu: 1
Greg B: 2
Roarsta: 1

Stage 5
So it was a stage 5 fish then Andy? Bit of a bummer about that, but you can't tell when they are first out of the water, I assume... Did Ian mention if there was any way to determine what stage they are at from an external view, apart from just being fat around the guts and knowing weather they are male/female?
Good on you guys for donating all your frames. The research guys, I work with some of them, will be most pleased. Well done. :)

Well done guys
The vid of Ian Keay dissecting the Coipasa Classic winning Dhufish is loading up right now. It will take me a while to get it sorted but should be on the site by about 10-30pm tonight. Apart from the poor sound quality (must get that camera fixed) it is very interesting viewing. A great little bit in there about ikijimi'ing the fish correctly. You will note that I went to iki the fish as normal but stopped short as I remembered that Ian was going to dissect the fish later that day. Luckily I stopped short of the brain case and the otiliths came out unscathed.
Good to know that my Iki spot is the right one.

Spangleds + Spaniards
I have now collected over 40 spangled frames in the last month and a bit. If you are headed up to Exmouth, please let me know, any spangled emperor frames or spanish mackerel heads that you catch would be greatly appreciated for fisheries research.
Good on you guys for continuing the great contribution to fisheries research. Goes a long way to helping us understand the species.

Ian picked up three dhuie frames today
Plus the Pinky from the weekend.
We spoke at length about the fishery and the research being done and he was very appreciative of Rockpoms involvement over a long period of time. Well done mate.
If Ian can't make it to the North Versus South comp perhaps we can leave any Dhuie frames from the day with Rockpom to be picked up later by Ian. Just a thought.

I'm afraid not Mav
Not sure of the final number but we certainly bumped it along a fair bit. There were quite a few extras from the comps that were donated but not marked up on here.
In fact in the SOR comp there were 11 Dhuies weighed in (just the largest on board for each angler, so in fact there could have been more caught) All dissected on site by Ian.
In the NOR comp there were another 11 weighed, so hopefully all those anglers donated their fish to the researches as Ian couldn't make it on the day.
We are now in a new year so lets not stop now. As far as I know the program is still going.

I hope they are not storing them in a freezer and in the next 6 months defrost them all and take a picture for the West with the heading Recreational Carnage? LOL

imo
Fisheries do use the frames and all research gathered to make educated decissions on what the future measures need to be for the fishes sustainability.....that's what they care about!
Without frames/research they will make "conservative changes" and not "calculated changes" ie erring on the side of caution!

Most!
Most processors sell the frames i'd asume etc so rec guys throwing the frames in the bin is a free option for them at a guess. I've had my say about the Fisheries over the years but will stand by them in saying they're doing their best in a not so perfect world!
