Dhufish Length Measurement
Submitted by Tom M on Mon, 2016-12-12 08:18
A discussion with a friend on the weekend about fisheries commenting to a fisherman last week on the rules for measuring Dhufish, fisheries guy says that the Dhufish is to be measured from the top lip, not from the point of the fish. Somewhat confusing giving that in the Recreational Fishing Guide page 8 states otherwise as below.
Size limits To check if your catch is of a legal size, measure finfish from the point of the snout to the tip of the tail.
Anyone want to comment on this, or had any experience with fisheries?

no experience with
no experience with fisheries, but all fish are measures from one end to the other, whatever is the longest lip / tail.
Common in Pinkies to have 1 tail fin longer than the other.

stuff like this just shits me
stuff like this just shits me ! sorry Tom not a go at you.
but cant fisheries just get their shit together.
Measuring fish just measure to the two furthest points and on a dhu that's bottom lip to tail (fish in a relaxed state and not stretching the tail out. )
so strange how every fisheries officer seems to have a different account of the rules.....bout time for some inhouse standardised training.
Imagine if a police officer pulled you up and said "oh no you must be more that 3kmph under the speed limit...here's your fine for doing 58ks in a 60k zone."

With you mate.
Always been a supporter of fisheries in WA, starting from the late 70,s early 80,s, when we almost had no rules per say.
There was a lot of complaints from the old school freezer fillers etc , but I could always see a point in protecting what we have and
not raping and pillaging for today. As different and sometimes harsh rule changes occurred I kept suporting them , trying to see the bigger picture.
However as we all know fisheries only have a few hundred officers at most verses say 5000+ for police officers
, so they are always going to have to rule thru education and if needed a big stick.
That does mean having the fishing public on there side, is paramount to protect the stocks , but recent P.R disasters
involving rule interpretation and court cases over excact meanings of words writing 20 years ago etc is really getting
beyond the pail.
Listen up fisheries , you are govt workers , public servants , you work for us , the community , and your there to do a job,
whilst respecting the right of all WA people to catch a feed of fish for the family , within the rules.
I think you are starting to pi.. off , normal , law abiding fishos , and theres no good to come of it.
Right wheres my tape measure?

Haha, I get that a lot where I work with the old “I pay your wages” and “I’m your boss” when they don’t like a decision based on an investigation. I did the sums once and if it were indeed a user pays system as they are inferring, then they would be entitled to 1.3 minutes of my time per annum.

Point lost
Thanks mate , for miss reading my post , and focussing on one small bit , My point is they are there to do a job for the community ,
and by seemly having a system thats open to interpretation by whatever fisheries officer you get on the day , or conducting fishing exercises on the rules
like charging Bret Carter for cray infringements, then rule changes on the run , it doesnt add to the publics confidence in the system.
I too have worked for the govt in the past , and where we worked , we had it drummed into us that the public were our customers ,
and too give them, the respect that relationship deserves.

Spot on. It's an agency
Spot on. It's an agency officer/customer relationship not an employer/employee relationship as many claim it to be when dealing with public servants.
I agree with your other points. A fisheries officer started going through my things at a jetty in Furnisdale last year without informing me he was going to do so. I'm sure he doesn't have to but if he did my perception of him wouldn't be so poor.

A trap...... but the regs do
A trap...... but the regs do state "from the point of the snout to the tip of the tail".
The snout being the nose, not the bottom lips which on a dhu jut forward.

While we are on the subject
Did a dawn run out of Mindarie today and got our bag. (crays). At the ramp was fisheries who casually strolled down the jetty to where i was holding the boat waiting for the trailer to arrive. I said good morning, he looked at me and siad i checked you yesterday so you are good, turned to the boat on the other side of the jetty and went through the whole thing, crays, flares, licenses etc. Bit strange as this is the first time this season i have been out.
The bloke in the boat with fisheries made me laugh. He handed his license to the officer who took one look and said "your lisence is out of date". The bloke siad no mate i got my lisence a few months ago. Officer says did you renew it a few months ago. He said no i just got my first one. Officer says that was a year and a few months ago... Doh looks like some explaining to do.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

I always wondered with
I always wondered with Baldchin gropers if you could include the teeth in the length measurement. They can add a couple of cm onto the size of the fish.
If it's from the "point of the snout" then I'm guessing the teeth aren't included.

1 rule?
Thanks Jackfrost , he could have asked before hand for sure, as far as measuring dhuies Tom m,
theres only one way shown to measure any fin fish in the bible ( 2016 version) put out by fisheries , from
tail tip to snout.
Whats a fishes SNOUT ? considering there are so many different shapes of fish , eg cobblers, dhu , mackies or
a john dory or something, I just cant say , because some what cynicly , it can come down to a individuals opinion.
A popular definition I found ( Hey Im waiting for a quad bike frame to be powder coated , Im at a loose end!) is as follows,
"'The snout is a protruding portion of a animals face, consisting of its nose , mouth and jaw''
Clear as mud as far that goes then.

size
If I have one that is that close to size it would go back just to be sure. Frustrating when the "experts" give conflicting advice.

Dhuies
I love my dhuies too, but if you have to measure it to see if it's size, it's already too small, throw it back.
