Diawa Sealine 30 - IIs - Preset/Freespooling ?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Thu, 2008-01-10 15:35
A while ago, I purchased two Diawa Sealine 30 IIs for bottom bouncing. Good solid real with the advantage of the two ratios.
As should be done, set the preset (drag) with the lever drag in the strike position.
However, I've noticed in a light drift when using a very light sinker, the free spool position of the lever drag still doesn't actuall free spool as such, there is still some resistance.
No problem with a heavier sinker though.
Any comments folks?
I can get the reel to free spool more quickly (free-er) by backing off the preset, but then, in tightening the preset 'in-situ' I run the risk of extending too high in to the rating of the line (using the std 1/3 setting method).

Drag
Depends what level of drag your trying to get out of it Colin. Most reels have a feespool at a certain drag level and if you try and get more drag by screwing in the preset you loose freespool.
Hope that makes sense.

Yup Tim
Yup Tim - it makes sense. I have it loaded with 80Lb (36.3 Kg) braid, will pull out the spring scale and do some testing!
Thanks for that.
Petty really, so the known maximum (using the 1/3 rule of course) is limited to the free spool, not the line PE. Unless of course the Line PE/3 <= preset / freespool threshold.

Yup
Pretty much right Colin.
Ive got an SLD 20 and 30 and they are really designed for something like 15kg (30lb). So if you go by the 1/3 rule of the 80lb braid, it is almost at the max the reel drag curve was designed for rather than at its freespool level.

Hmmm
I took advice on the line - yeah certainly didn't apply the 1/3 rule on 80lb - thats a very high setting, but given that most of the fish I catch are generally around the 8-12 kilo mark and in very snaggy country - I wanted something with fairly quick stopping power. Otherwise I'd get buried - a 10 kg Queenie will apply a lot more than 10 kg of (initial) pull, that's for sure.
I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that the 30 was designed for higher than that.
Lets face it, they're not a cheap real. Lovelly to use otherwise - heavy though.

OK
Nothing wrong with how yours it set up Colin but they are really a trolling reel. Have a look at the line recommendations stamped on it. They are for 30 -40 and 50lb mono. Just something you have to realize when loading reels up with heavy braid that werent designed for it that while they will cope there may be some limitations.
Look at a Penn 16VSX which is designed for 80lb braid but its twin the 16VS (same reel different drag curve) is primarily an 8kg Game Reel.
