I dont know if it strickly legal Russ, but I would be mounting the flare to the rocket ( upside down fire ext) as well as the epirb , waiting till some long weekend or holiday event , drink heaps of cheap booze and send her up , pull pin on rocket , when said bomb runs outa puff it falls , releasing parachute flares and releasing epirb button,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but hey that's just me.

I usually keep 1 current set and 1 expired set on the boat.
When I get a new set I drop the oldest ones off to sea rescue

As Beau has said
If they have been well stored and looked after they will still be good for a year or so after their expiry date, keep them on board and well marked as “expired” you can never have enough flares if you are in an emergency situation.

old flares...
In Sth Aust old flares are classed as explosives and MUST be turned in to particular police stations that are equipped to handle them.
Of course, these police stations are at very inconvenient locations..............

DOT removed references to being allowed to keep expired flares (liability I imagine) but don’t say you cant
keep them.
If they are in good nick, sealed I hang on to them.
Damp, weeping etc get rid of them ASAP

The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
