Diving Ropes etc

hi all,

bit of a weird question though I was wondering how other divers store their "diving safety" lines on their boats.  At the moment I have a mermaid line out the back of the boat an am currently setting up a deco line aswell just to hang directly under the boat.

With each rope being up to 30m I'm starting to get a few ropes laying around the boat which is getting alittle messy.  Has anyone come up with a good way to store/release/retrieve their diving lines?

I was thinking of setting up something similar to a garden hose reel on the back of the boat for an easy way to release and retrieve each rope?  Any ideas/suggestions??

cheers

Wayne

I have a descender that never really gets used and a mermaid. Personally I just coil them and throw them into the transom stowage. Some people bag their ropes to prevent tangling.

My descent line doubles as the anchor rope, or vice versa. Mermaid line is in a bag in the shed!!

Most the boats I have been on generally keep extra lines in crates or boxes.

i carry a shorter 15m memaid line on a small dive flag float(the shore diving type) i just gather the rope up put the float in a rod holder i put on the inside edge of the motor well,i then loop the rope over the short flag pole doobie no tangles and always ready to go with no space taken up.

We also carry a 40m deco line, i just coil that up on a cable wheel/spool thingo a sparky mate gave me fits snug in the side pocket of the boat not much space taken up at all

I use a very long deck line

Mon, 2009-10-05 09:50

I use a very long deck line (about 30m) that doubles as a mermaid line.  I cleat one end on the starboard stern cleat, run it round the front and back down to the port side stern cleat.  Coil up the slack in the front, when not in use so that it is out of the way and hang it off a bow cleat.  The best way to do this is to coil up the slack, put your hang thru the coil, grab the secured bit of the line, move the coil over it and twist the line you are holding a couple of times then just hang it off the cleat.

Haven't set up an ascend line yet.

stop being such a sook,

and stop using so many lines.

we use one line - the ANCHOR.

use plenty of chain at the heavy end (anchor), and use your head to position the boat where you want to dive. let out at least 3 times the depth you are diving on your achor line. wait a few minutes and check your plotter / GPS to see if you've moved. dive on your anchor, and check to make sure she's holding good. then proceed to fill your catch bag with crays and fish.

works every time for me.

cheers fellas - good to get

cheers fellas - good to get some feedback:)

I've heard of blokes having chain at the end of their deco lines so you can hear it under water - anyone tried this? would be surprised if u could actually hear it...

Scotto - would like to be that confident mate:)  I've only been diving for one season and becuase we are now venturing out to the deeper water (usually without anyone on the boat) i'd rather make use of these lines.

Once we get a little bit better at underwater navigating and coming up closer to the boat then I'm sure these lines won't get used as much:)

chain

Mon, 2009-10-05 23:42

Yea i have chain at the bottom of my line, i have about 8 meters gathered up into about a 1m lenght. mainly use the chain because of extra weight (about 5kgs) its easier than tying on extra weights as i dive with a few guys who haven't totally mastered their boyancy on accent and makes holding on for deco stop easier. yes its a bonus you can hear it plain as day for about 100m away but being underwater you can never tell wat direction it is coming from. atleast u know if the sound disappears somethings wrong up top :)
