Diy craypots

Im giving the crays a shot for the first time this season and im building my own pots,  do I really need the slats that go down into the pot in the drop hole or can i just leave a hole in the top of the pot with no funnel?

 I think the slats are so the Crays can't walk back out off the pots and so seals can't get the crays as well

Fingers are cheaper but require more work, both catch the same but red necks keep crays in for a bit longer as they cannot see the opening when inside
