Does half a fish count

     G'day legends

Fishing of Dongara this weekend with 3 on board. Caught a nice dhuie but got sharked and only got back about half the fish.

Only dhu we got but one of the guys asked the question and we couldnt answer it. Saw Fisheries at the ramp, which is always good

to see those guys, so we posed the question to them and they also didnt know the answer so I'm just gonna put it out there.

Does that half fish count towards the bag limit? i would think it does even though a shark got half of it.

Fisheries officer seemed to think maybe not but neither of us would risk the fine if wrong.

      What do you legends think?

As they say always err on the side of caution, so  yep.

And to clarify I asked fisheries up north one day what constitutes bait on your boat and what is counted as fish, his answer was anything that's not packaged. So I guess your answer is there.

Depends really on a judgement call-if you can call it a "head/wings and backbone" and say you were bringing it in to hand over for research...

I'd say it counts, and to be on the safe side, would assume that the half dhu would need to measure 50cm.

Half a fish counts as a whole fish towards your bag limit, that's a no brainer and for the officers must have been trainees if they couldn't answer it.

Was not being smart ass . 2 half fish count as limit .( 1 person limit) . Been down this path before ,on bronzies biting back end out on pinks. In sound or nrth end . A real fisheries officer knows this . There training should teach them this . I will not go down path of previous encounters again . ( on them not knowing limits or what they are) They all should know the rules .or maybe there under staffed ( like some places At the moment ). Not digging at them . push them through training ? New ? Who knows . It’s my bible .I read it ( not well) and study all new rules . You have to .

Your only half the fish you used to be Jonny.....

With possibly new lower bag limits ( if thats even workable) eventually coming , id be saying not many half dhus coming home ..

I would be gently releasing that 50% challenged fish to the briney and go chase one that has a head and a tail

However maybe new rules will not allow returned dhues , catch and take one any size and your done....

i had this happen to me the other day, brought up half a dhu, whole dhu wuld have been size, but the half was obviously under.  if the half is under do we throw it back? did in this case, whcked off aome chunks for bait, then  threw it back, but didnt want to risk any troube.

 Not much point in keeping

Thu, 2022-04-28 11:08

Not much point in keeping half a dhuie as the best part is gone and the fish is dead anyway!

Or do it my way and don't even catch either half!
