Dolphins playing with big Sting Rays

I was out having a paddle on the yak yesterday morning out behind Tern Island in Safety Bay when I came across these two dolphins 'playing' with a couple of BIG rays.

At first I thought they may have been feeding together and half expected to see a school of bait fish or something when I saw the footage but there was nothing that I could see.

It was a pretty cool sight - gonna have to start carrying a set of goggles and flippers on board - would have loved to have had a dive with them.

Excuse the shaky footage, I got this with the GoPro on the pole. In these situations the GoPro's really are a PAH camera - Point And Hope.

Anyone else seen them behaving like this?

Id say the dolphin is waiting for the stingray to flush out a squid or two. Good footage

good video,given the wide

good video,

given the wide angle of gopro's I'm not quite sure its point and hope as if you point it at what you want to get its a bit hard to miss (not always dead centre but you usually get it)

Thanks for the comments and

Thanks for the comments and for watching. Looks like the general consensus is that the dolphins are just hanging for an easy feed which makes sense in retrospect.

@sheldoncy23, this was about 200m South of Tern Island which is the local name for the sand spit that is slowly growing out from Safety Bay yacht club, so that would have put me about 400m from the actual shoreline.

@Paul H, don't mean to sound like i'm knocking the GoPro, they're an awesome bit of kit. Certainly a lot easier when your setting up a fixed position on the boat or whatever and you can use your iPad or phone as a monitor to see how your shot is framed. In this instance I had the wind blowing me one way, the dolphs and rays going the other and only one pair of hands to paddle and film - I was so wrapped that i got anything.

Again thanks for the comments, you put this stuff out there in the hope that you don't make too much of a dick of yourself so if a few people get to enjoy that's great .

No problems. - biggest

No problems. - biggest problem with hand held shooting is keeping the camera steady rather than it waving all over the place which does not make for good viewing.

majority of your footage was pretty steady so you did well.

Cheers
