Eagle rays???

hey guys!

was just wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on how to land an eagle ray, ive been trying for a couple of years now, using large butter-fish as bait!

what is the desired line strength, i was thinking 30lb fireline???

what leader???

what rig would i actually use, i know the trick is to keep the bait on the bottom but nothin seems to work with the rigs i use... i usually use 5/0 hooks?

running sinker or fixed sinker?

wire trace or just a mono leader?

cheers guys!

can u keep them?

Tue, 2012-06-19 18:18

just a question

is it legal to catch a couple in the freo area of the swan and keep a couple for a feed?

the reason i ask is we have a couple of 457 visa mechanics at my work who are always asking me to bring them one in to cook up

just want to make sure it is above board to do so before i go fishing for them with the though in mind to keep one to try eating

Yes you can,

You can keep to rays per day or 2 sharks. But you cant keep 2 sharks and 2 rays. But 1 and 1 is ok.

Hey buddy try palm beach in between the two boat ramps there, there are heaps cruising along the shallows, I used to hook them on the fly gear when I was going down there learning how to cast.

40lb ish

Tue, 2012-06-19 20:33

I've caught plenty of eagles and stingers of varying sizes (including some absolute monsters) over the last couple of years. I typically use 40lb mono with a 60lb flouro leader....this stops most of them. Still get smoked by the big sharkies. Have used 60-80lb braid with a lot of success on the really big stingers up north.

Usually find rig doesn't matter too much....snelled hooks are good if you want to rescue your tackle. Gangs will often be partiallly swallowed so you may have to cut the line to release. I find most of my rays and sharks are bycatch chasing mullas - so normally running ball sinkers or stars to a heavy duty swivel. Then leader to hooks. Bait wise anything works for rays.

I find the biggest challenge is always getting them onto the beach, can be extremely challenging in surf conditions especially if you have a bit of a drop off.

How do you guys get rays off

Tue, 2012-06-19 20:44

How do you guys get rays off the bottom?

My last two trips out I seem to be getting rays that stick to the bottom for 5 mins then get up and gun for the horizion and repeat step 1. This is with a locked drag and 300m of 30lb braid. Good thing the knots slipped just before it reached the backing.

Just make sure that if

Wed, 2012-06-20 00:47

Just make sure that if letting anyone else know about catching and keeping rays that you cant do it around the Hamelin Bay boat ramp/main beach area now(i know its no where near Perth but just for info sake).

Such was the outrage when some people of Asian origin went down and caught, killed, and cut up one of the resident friendly big rays down there(called Stumpy as she didnt have a tail or barb) that it has now been made a safe zone for stingrays by fisheries.

*not being racist to Asians, part Asian myself, but thats what appeared to be the race of people that killed Stumpy.

There are plenty around

Sat, 2013-05-25 11:37

There are plenty around Perth, and especially around Rotto. Salmon Bay at Rotto has sh*tloads, and they are literally right by your feet.

Just about any tackle is fine, although I recommend a fairly heavy rod and reel with at least 20lb line. The terminal tackle doesn't matter I find, and they will take just about any bait they find.
