Eating Fish Guts - delicious!!
My whole life flashed before my eyes a couple of weekends ago when a mate of mine introduced me to eating roe and liver of fish.
I have held roe so big and fat that it fit into two hands, only to throw it over the side, or to the thankful seagulls, with the rest of the guts. I knew people ate it but had just never crossed the line. Didnt even know you could eat liver.
NEVER AGAIN!!
It was so incredibly delicious, so much tastier than the flesh (we were eating nannygai) - I was stunned, and spent a few teary moments reflecting on all of the goodness I had neglected until now.
We had it just egg-and-breadcrumbed, and it was unreal. How else do you cook it? Any other bits worth eating?
Anyone know if it might be bad to eat liver from larger predatory fish? i.e. heavy metal or toxin accumulations...? I plan to gorge myself on it this Exmouth trip...
Cheers! any thoughts?

bare in mind that you will come across roe and liver from certain fish that will taste fully shiet. But some fish its awesome, some sux. Roe, depending on the fish sometimes quite costly to buy and its not all that often to find. Just feel that bonus lucky feelin when you get a good tasting one.

Dhuey roe
Went out friday and got a Dhuey with roe inside of it. Tried pan frying it in butter and salt. It was not the flavour I remember (my mum used to cook it). I will try snapper next but Dhuey roe is definitley not for me.

A lot of the old pro
A lot of the old pro fishermen back where I used to live in SA loved the roe from big snapper. They'd sell the fillets and keep the frame and roe for themselves. The frames and heads would get smoked and the roe was dusted in flour or crumbs and shallow fried. I've tried it a few times and it's pretty good. With the smoked frames and heads they would almost fight for the eye then the cheek meat. I never got around to doing the eye but the cheek meat was worth keeping in bigger fish.

I've eaten fish guts
but didn't know it at the time and they were very nice, snapper livers are very tasty but quiet rich so a couple is nice, whiting roe is very very nice bread crumbed and fried in butter delicious, my old cat would kill you for whiting roe, my mother loves the fish cheeks, she reckons they are the best. We have European friends that deep fry the dhuie bladder, they reckon its yummy haven't tried that one yet. Our Italian friend also keeps all the backbones and bbq's them, to fishy for me.

Dhuey air bags
If you do them in butter in a hot frypan they come out like pork crackle in texture ,the taste is difficult to explain, sort of like a whiting taste

Once went out on a boat with a work mob on an overnite fishing adventure, got to the heads in Freo harbour and the call was too rough to head to Rotto, give it a miss hit the piss.
We slept onboard after lots of beers and headed out to Rotto at first light.
Was coping well enough keeping the bely settled despite quite a swell running. We got fishing and chanced a school of snapper.
We had 2 Maori boys onboard, they were hooking the eyeballs out of the fish and eating them raw for breckie,I produced an award winning berley,5 TIMES!!!!!

Roe Trials...
Ah that is interesting that roe of different fish taste good/bad...I'm gonna try a variety over the next couple of weeks while we are up here in Exy...will let ya know how it goes...!!
Thanks for the offers of your spare roe/livers...just pop em in an envelope and send em to:
My Place, Perth WA 6009
hahha lol
Dhuie air bags ay...that is definitely the first time I've heard that!! fish crackling...sounds pretty good.
I made fish jerky once by accidentally leaving some salmon strips in a smoker overnight...came out pretty good, totally dried and preserved, lasted for ages, but thats a bit off topic...
Definitely a fan of head flesh...cooking fish whole in the oven yields so much more meat than filletting, even with taking wings and filleting so you can see through it...Gully has an incredible recipe for crispy Thai baked fish, cheeks are the best bits.
I'll have to be dared to eat the eyeballs raw i reckon - i will if you do, sort of thing...
Cheers,
Ewan
