Eating shark mac

Managed to make the most of the calm weather yesterday afternoon and got out with Nick aka Pajman on this forum. Caught a shark Mackerel on the light gear which despite our efforts would not release and as such decided to keep it. Bled it completely out before putting it on ice. I've read mixed reports as to their eating quality. I'm thinking of making a curry but open to any other suggestions!

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum mate. Nice fish, nice pic, and nice boat by the looks of the engine.

as for the shark mackerel, I reckon curry is about all she's good for, but that's just my personal opinion.

cheers

They are not bad eating. I've been surprised a couple of times when I ask what fish is this and they say sharkie. Not my preference but I wouldn't throw them away. Keep the belly flaps for bait though.

If you treat them properly

Tue, 2017-02-14 21:04

You'll be battling to tell them from Spaniard. Their name came about from the fact that, if not bled and iced immediately, they give off a strong ammonia smell like shark. I personally believe they have a bad name from the good ole days when you just chucked your catch in a wet bag in the bottom of the dinghy, or ina rockpool,  and thought that was good enough. Certainly not a good way to treat fish, but some take it better than others. Shark mackerel would go off real quick, hence an established , unfounded prejudice.

I've eaten plenty, and fed it to other fresh, and they reckoned it was great. Just bleed it well and ice it properly.

Yep Ranmar on the money here, sharkies are good , I have had some ripper feeds off them in the past when treated properly , you have a feed equal to a Spaniard.

Putting them in a curry is ok I guess, but frying them up on a barbie with some milder spice like a touch of lemon pepper or dusting them in the old tandaco seasoned flour coating will be so much better , you can use buff bream in a curry and probably get away with it, so don't waste it.

Thanks for that feedback Tommo. A lot of time, money and effort has gone into getting them to the stage they're at now.
