Foxes and Cats

Sun, 2015-02-22 20:48

I recently heard that a fox or a cat will eat something like 8 natives per day. Therefore the removal of those predators should make a big impact on the area. 15 foxes is a good nights shooting, well done

Do you know what have you done.

Sun, 2015-02-22 23:18

By your posting photos like that on a forum like this you have just sent the publics opinion of hunters/shooters back 100 years.

No I'm not an anti shooter/hunter, I culled animals for a number of years and sold the carcases to the pet food trade.
To post photos of animals in such a state with bloody great holes in them is plain dumb.

For god's sake use a bit of maturity in your actions, you have just given every anti shooter/hunter and anti gun person 10 years supply of propaganda.

Am I missing something, Meglodon?

Mon, 2015-02-23 05:09

In the Glenn McGrath/elephant thread you told us to worry about our native ring-tailed possums? If you're concerned about what the wowsers might think of this thread, tell them to read your post on the other one.

Maybe this country needs an apex predator to control the cats/foxes without having much interest in the smaller natives...leopards perhaps? What could possibly go wrong, lol!

Head shots (photo) would have been better.  15 less feral foxes to hunt our endangered animals.

No, no fights- LOL -scratched myself going thru the scrub trying to recover foxes/rabbits.

If anyone wishes me to delete the post just let me know.

For the record most critters were headshot (pics look way more gory!) - as for " bloody great holes"?  that was was with my little .223. should of seen the holes from the 25/06 haha. 4000 sheep on the place so saved a few lambs for the farmer.

Please point out

Mon, 2015-02-23 17:02

Please, just show me where in my post I inferred that I was against the taking of foxes, cats or any other vermin. If you read what I have stated is that I think the posting of photos of dead animals with great boody exit holes showing is in poor form.

Ever shooter and every person who owns a firearm has a responsibility to other firearm owners to not do anything that will prejudice their continued ownership of a firearm.

In short don't give the anti firearm brigade a free tool to use against gun owners.

As a life member of SSAA and a senior office holder for a number of years (admittedly a long time ago) I'm very well aware of just what the anti gun brigade are capable of.

To address the statement about doing the state a favour by reducing the fox and feral cat population I couldn't agree more, it's great to see and I'm fully in favour of the taking of introduced ferals that cost our primary producers a lot of money, and as an aside there was a double page story in the Sunday times I think it was, about how the size of the dingo population has caused a station owner out of business and great trauma for a number of other stations.

To bring the size of the population of these predators back to a acceptable size by shooting them, shooting is a very good way of doing things.

Shooting is a selective process unlike poisoning, and very controllable.

So, please express your opinions on what I have posted by all means, but keep them subject focussed you will have my respect for them.

Meg has some valid points-I

Mon, 2015-02-23 17:16

Meg has some valid points-I also shoot, hunt and post the odd pic here but personally am careful along the lines of what Meg has said.

Remember that city folk are very easily influenced (and out of touch with country life generally speaking) so only takes a couple of glib one-liners attached to a gory pic (fish included) to get these gumbies to sign a petition.

The caption doesnt even need to be true, just remotely believable such as "this housecat was shot in Cottesloe by a crazy gun nut..."

Laughable but it happens.

Not worth the bother with the photos mate. ive learnt my lesson.

yep Tikka tactical heavy barrel stainless .223 with a leupold vx3 6x18 that i used to use for pro roo shooting. Also had my tikka hunter blued 25/06 with a 2.5 x 10 scope. Plus a shottie and the .22lr -of course.

My mate was deadly as usual with his heavy barrel ruger in 243.

Create content button up top on left, then select the discussion board type.

Works best if you 'host' the pics on say photobucket and then embed a link using the little link emoticon above the comment box.

Killing cats?

Tue, 2015-02-24 20:34

Have done a fair bit of reading on trying to eradicate our feral cat (wish it was domestic as well) population and found information on some trials in the USA and Africa suggesting  trapping them and steralizing, then releasing back into the scrub. Apparently the population has declined using this method, you could shoot them till the cows come home but  it has done didly squat to reduce numbers, sure feels good though.

Hopefully this new approach to 1080 just announced and about to be widely spread throughout WA will work, apparently it has had 100% success rate in an area I can't recall the name of.

Fox on the other hand, not sure how to go about eradicating them, just keep on shooting them I spose.

Have my cat trap set in my front yard right now trying to catch a big moggy I saw the other day.

I trap cats using Vic 1.5 soft catch traps. got 13 on mates wheat/sheep farm on pig hunting trip the other winter, all big bush cats (plus a couple foxes). very labour intensive, but best way of taking them out of the bush imo.

Hi fathom

Tue, 2015-02-24 20:47

 Interesting feedback - Thanks.

As we say 1 cat is worth 10 foxes, ives shot hundreds of foxes and only around 20 cats.

Best was when we pulled over for a break - dont ask me why but a cat made a nest up in a grasstree (blackboy) heard some meows. My Italian mate jumped over the fence and gave it 5 shots with his browning semi auto when they were still legal)  6 kittens fell out. still got the photo.  wont be posting that one.

Ive got a beautiful pet cat 14 years old. ..stilll love to nail on them on properties.

Cheers

recent shoot

Mon, 2015-03-09 19:42

update... Went back up with the family, used a homemade whistle from 2 12g shot shells cut to the brass and glued together.. got 3 more foxes and a cat. really worked a treat . left the big guns at the house and took the .22lr. very satisfying calling those eyes in from hundreds of meters away and getting clean shot close in with the .22.  kids are begging to go back up - had the 4 year old driving  the tractor (fully supervised), got the old bore working for the farmer,,,kids enjoyed pulling a few  sheep out stuck in the dam mud.   Busted a few hundred brown beer bottles in the traditional farm pit dump.  good family fun.

More foxes...

Tue, 2015-03-17 15:23

Had another lap of the farm and got 5 more big foxes so thats 23 foxes and 2 feral cats in a month. Pretty scary when you think that only one farm (5000 acres) out of thousands.   going back this weekend. Farmer loves us (and his carton of beer as thanks!).
