Caught this guy at eshed, very unusual. Let him go and swam off very strong. Dont even think he was hooked just tangled up...
Anyone know the species?

snake eel?
marine fishes of n/w wa, says maybe a flappy snake eel numb 116 in book,
albany northwards grows to 42cm, inhabits sandy bottoms, more like swanbourne northwards then haha.
Or possibly a numb118 olive snake eel, but says broome northwards, so must have caught a lift with sherbs mackie!
well done on releasing it mark, adds to the diversity down there.

Wow never seen anything like that
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Pike Eel
Hi Marc,
Wow - this is another exciting find for us! This is a Pike Eel (family Muraenesocidae, if you are interested...). It is probably a member of the genus Muraenescox (if you have Hutchins Sea Fishes of Southern Australia - see species #82), but I can't tell you which species without seeing the specimen (ID is based on teeth). We have no records of this genus of pike eels south of Shark Bay, so it is very interesting. If you ever catch another one, we'd happily accept a donation to add to the state's collection, and be able to put a proper species name to it. I'm all for releasing things too, but these sort of scientific records are so important to us. They have a good set of chompers, so take care...
They grow to about 6 feet in length!
Thanks for posting it.
(edit: good timing, by the way. We have Australia's eel expert visiting at the Museum at the moment, so I could confirm that I had this correct)

maybe
but there is also a species in the south-east and it could be that one, extending its known range across the Bight...

It’s great to have someone with this kind of knowledge on the site! And also quite a bit of luck that the fish was caught by someone with good talent for photography. .
Well done.

Thanks guys,Remember
Thanks guys,
Remember though, most of the IDs made by others on here are correct. I enjoy reading the discussions about what something might or might not be. Doesn't matter if it's a bit off the mark at times, at least people are having a go at it. There are a lot of experienced fishos who know their species and many that are wanting to learn. They might not know a Muraenesox when they see it though

Young threadfin
Yes this is a young threadfin. Another interesting metro record. I could have a reasonable guess at the species, but unfortunately, it is impossible to be sure of the species from a photo (there are 6 species known from WA).

Be interested what other footage turns up from the fella filming underwater at Freo. it will be many years before all the fish are ID'd correctly Interesting times ahead. Good to see "unusual" species turning up and being recorded

conger eels
If you are talking about the eel, just note that conger eels are quite common in the metro area and they look quite similar.

gps challenged fish
not all true northern species , but we have had a fair bit of crossover this year in Perth metro "abandon"
Whale shark, manta ray, cobia, broadbar mackeral ,indo pacific sailfish , spangled emporer( baby)
threadfin ( baby),eel as mentioned and couple of types of northern trevally, and for divers and swimmers has anyone noticed a influx of
jellys that are not normally seen much?
Also in Warnbro sound the other day a mate and me saw a ball of those baby striped catfish, not sure if are normally seen?
whos got more?
And scally mates down from up north dont count!
