The End of Steep Point
With the booking system to get a spot already being virtually impossible, check out this from the latest DPIRD Catch! newsletter
Did you know, that the Environmental Protection (Prohibited Plastics and Balloons) Regulations 2018 state that it is an offence to release a balloon into the air?
This new regulation aims to prevent plastics from entering the environment where they can be ingested by wildlife, break down into microplastics, and pollute our land and waterways.
Although balloon fishing is not illegal, the regulations will apply if the balloon is released either intentionally, by cutting it loose, or otherwise and the balloon tie to the main line breaks.
If you see a potential breach of these regulations or would like further information, contact the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation at plastic-action@dwer.wa.gov.au
so if the balloon bursts, or your balloon leader snaps- you gonna be in for a swim to get the pieces

Plastic and ocean doesn't go
Plastic and ocean doesn't go together.
Yeah it's a small part of the problem but it is a known one and it needs to be addressed.
I guess it's time to develop corn starch balloons

I just sent them an email
I just sent them an email before - latex balloons are not plastic and are readily biodegradable. Having said that, it doesn't happen overnight and could definitely end up eaten by marine life. I wonder how long until losing a lure is illegal?

In all seriousness it was
In all seriousness it was only a matter of time, and iI must admit that I don't feel right at all if I send out a balloon to then see it scoot free across the water and would pay extra to buy a readily biodegradable solution.

Disappointment
Had a moment of disappointment once, mate and I spent about an hour trying to get balloons out and finally I succeeded in getting it out passed the windshadow of the cliffs and a few minutes later heard a rifle shot, mate was pissed off with the ribbing I gave him about mine getting out and his failing so he went back to the wagon and pulled the rifle out and was taking pot shots at my balloon,

Maybe seaweed
Saw that some plastic-like materials for food wrappers and so on can be made from seaweed. Probabaly dissolves a bit quick in water, but still in development and likely something can be tweaked and then away we go with seaweed balloons

Also in
Also in that Newsletter they asked people to complete a survey on fresh water fishing,
Perhaps this will be next in line to be banned, or get tougher restrictions.

also in?
used to go samson dam out the back of waroona. Some really big brown trout there me and a mate did a dive along the dam wall and picked up some big marron. It was deemed a live water dam as the food in it was abundant so the trout got big quick. it was an irrigation dam originally then the bastards made it a catchment dam for the water supply so no more fishing allowed. The trout were bloody big, i had on at least three occasion brown trout to 6 pound chase my lures in. Bugger the water board.

Agree!
Trawlers ripping the guts out of the gulf and everyone thinks it is acceptable since it has been going on for years, something protect ningaloo never mentions. Ha ha!

The End of Steep Point
This post gives me a laugh, as the old boys (Uncles and Dad) made the same call in 1984. (Too crowded) Their all in there late 70s mid 80s now. Last year they pulled the pin on the annual trip after 54 years, 1968-84 Steep Point, 1984-2021 False Entrance. Spending my teenage years fishing the cliffs of the region was truly awesome. I head back there occasionally but just not the same. Same for Wagoe.

Booking system is a disgrace
I recently went in to see what was available for April/May next year at Shelter Bay.
Firstly it told me a was 72nd in the queue and needed to wait or come back at another time. I waited and eventually got in, but this never happened with the old system.
Then I found that the system is impossible to use effectively. Whereas the old system allowed you to view a couple of weeks for each site in a table view, the new one only allows you to nominate 1 site for a fixed period. If there is any contention the system just tells you its unavailable. You have no clue whether its just 1 day at the beginning or end of your booking, or the whole period, or whether another site is available for that period. Its unworkable and designed by clowns. Under the old system you could at a glance see if another site was available, or how you needed to manipulate your booking to make it fit.
It's almost as though they want to make it as hard as possible to use so we stop going. They have won, because we found it so hard to use we gave up.....we'll go somewhere else.
