EPIRB question

I was goin to PM carnarvanite for this, but thought it would be worth others knowing as well.

Im headin to quobba / gnaraloo in a few months, but just goin with the missus and dog, and not taking the boat.

my question is this - is it ok to take my boat EPIRB with me for safety reasons (like if i flip the car whilst 4 wheel driving, or fall off a cliff)?

does the signal emited from the epirbs we carry on our boats only go to sea rescue? is it common practice to do this (take boat epirbs in 4wds)?

would they do a search on land if a boat epirb was activated?

I always carry my EPERB when

I always carry my EPERB when on long road trips, even inland. Yes it's registered to my boat, but if it saves my life by alerting people of my situation and lief&death needs, then it's doing the right job.
I don't think they would ignore a boat EPERB going off in the outback! they would contact the numbers registered for it and would then find out you where on a road trip etc and follow up anyways.

Register and advise of your movements!

Scotto

Your '406' EPIRB should be registered now.

https://www.beacons.amsa.gov.au/

Within this site you can actually leave a message that you will be travelling to ABC for so many days and have the EPIRB with you.  I would assume that this information would be seen when your EPIRB is activated.

I used this for my Steep Point trip last year and even for the long weekend just gone (took small tinnie instead of main boat).

Cheers Pete

I once heard the boat epribs have to be in the water to properly transmit  as they use the ocean like a reflector dish ?

you can register one epirb to at least 3 vehicles/boats. I seem to remember registering mine to my boat & 2 four wheel drives.

Take it with you,if it is set off regardless of it being on land or sea it will still register you position and a search to locate its exact position will be started regardless.
If you have a UHF radio in your vehicle check with Tim Meecham at Quobba homestead and find what frequency they use on the station so if some emergency may happen you can notify them.

Yeah it's ok to use on land.

Yeah it's ok to use on land. Using the ocean as a reflective thing is an old wives tale so to speak.
