Esperance in February/March

Hi All,

I'm heading down to Esperance for a couple weeks in February/March with the GF and would love some tips about where to go beach and rock fishing as I don't have a boat. I have a Subaru XV so can get off road to an extent and would like to test it out a bit and see how well it handles the beaches.

We will be basing ourselves (camping) in Esperance but might want to spend a couple nights camping to the East if there area some good spots. Have read a few forum posts but hoping there could be a few more updated tips.

How's the fishing been down there recently and what's being caught?

Thanks and any help would be great!!

Cheers

Any of the close beaches are still prety good mate such as Fourth Beach, Salmon Beach, the back of Twilight and to some extent 9 Mile (this one will require a walk down a steep long trail to get to beach as i dont think your car could go down the little track. or you could head east of town a bit more out to Kelp Heads (Wylie Bay area) or further out to Lucky Bay area all the beaches are pretty good just look for a good hole or gully, if your after a good  feed of Whiting just take some light gear to bandy creek boat harbour (town side) and plop your self down near the anglers club usually a few swimming around they like fresh pippies which you can usually collect from near boat launch area, squid are also good from the jetties along with the occasional bonito and descent snook (plenty of herring and slimy mackrel too for live baits).

salmon beach

Down at salmon beach to the right of it there is another set of rocks that goes out a bit further into the water, there is a reef platform just out from it on the other side with a fast moving channel next to it. Easy to cast into the turbulance and i nailed heaps of salmon there a few weeks ago. Lots of bull herring too and the wind direction you normally get down there makes it like an offshore wind (helps casting with light lures). Take a few halco twisties and you will certainly catch yourself a feed. Biggest salmon i got would have been about 2kg (it was this big trust me haha), nothing massive but lots of fun on light gear.

Good luck

Thanks for that Crowie! glad to hear you had some luck down there and looking to catching a good feed!

Probably spend a few nights out at Thomas River as well as Cape Le Grande. Hopefully find some good spots out that way. Parents are coming day for part of it so will have a decent 4WD to get to some more remote places hopefully.

Heading back to perth with a few nights in Hopetoun and Bremer Bay as well so should be able to get some decent fishing of that time!
