Exmouth advice

Got a mate on his way to Exmouth who has only fished there on a billfish charter previously. As a result he needs some advice on current fishing conditions. I have fished there quite a bit but not recently so I don't feel qualified to give the advice needed. He'll be fishing in a 5.5m plate ali out of Tantabiddi, and fishing with another larger boat.

He is looking for best depths and locations to troll for billfish, and also might troll some divers for mackies at other times. For bottom fishing he can find his own spots and I've told him to move whenever he gets sharked (which will be often based on reports this year!).

Would also like to know where to find weed beds that might hold squid.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

 Winter it is more stripies

Fri, 2018-07-06 12:21

Winter it is more stripies than blacks and blues. Not really prime time for bills but the stripies I have caught in Exmouth have come from the shallower blue grounds. 150-400m range.

Weedbeds inside the gulf are everywhere. Just need to keep moving till you find the squid. Have had great days straight in front of the marina and other times ran down towards kailis and done well.

Just in and out over the contours keeping eye out for bait on the sounder or bird activity. I don’t run skirts until I get outside 60m in Exmouth. The Mack’s just tear them up.

Thanks TP. I've usually got mackies and wahoo on drop-offs around 15 - 20m.

Do you troll contours north-south for the billies? We trolled from around 200's to maybe 50m one year and lost all lures in the spread to a wahoo or mackie wolf pack.

not really fishing related, but if he's not with Telstra or optus, get a sim card activated before you head up! Vodafone has nothing, and is a bit of a prick when you need the damn internet to activate the sim card! lol.

we just trolled mostly from 70-100 metres not really following contours just covering ground looking for temp breaks and bait then once we found bait we worked those areas and moved on if nothing happened after a while.

we generally go ok in the canyons to the south of the ramp, trolling east-west, for smaller blacks.

My mate has done okay on mackies and wahoo etc. but not on marlin. His mate in another boat got a couple of marlin but I don't know if they were stripies or blacks.

Anyone got any further info on where the action is?

Cheers!

This time of year he should be able to pick up small blacks into the80-120kg mark. Try the 80-200m countorus south of Tantabidi. Also is he running electronics with a decent cartography and  water temp.

Thanks Wanderer. He actually got 2 blacks in that area in about 70m on Friday. One was a little one but the second one about 120kg.

Yeah I think his electronics were decent but don't know about his ability to use them!
