surely is a swordy
good catch on the swordy!
But they arent uncommon, around Sept they are up that way breeding (maybe) in a big way.
Just that nobody either targets or has the right technique (luck!) sorted.
When we were longlining we were never up there at this time of year, only Dec Jan Feb, and there would be a few around but nothing too spectactular as we were after yellowfin.
But Im just looking in my old books now and see (plucking a couple of days at random) the following
10/12/02 8 swords 60-85kg
13/11/02 14 swords to 70kg
13/12/02 15 swords to 80kg (average only 40kg though much smaller than our normal sthn average of about 70-90 across all)
Under 30-35kg released if alive
thats all along the edge from Exmouth up to Rankin Bank on the drop off 500+ meters
One boat I know of went up there in Sept and found alot of big swordies.
