Exmouth Gas Rigs
Submitted by jettyrat on Sat, 2012-10-20 17:34
Heard on the radio that the greens are not happy because there is going to be exploration gas rigs close to ningaloo reef. It is bad for fishing as well because they don't let you go near the rigs or the pipes because of the threat of terror and damage from anchors etc. Does anyone know where these gas rigs are going?

Fishing spots closer in like Helby, The Steps, Beachcombers and Kerry's is what they were talking about.

I wouldn't be too concerned
I wouldn't be too concerned it's a big ocean. The NOPSEMA safety case for these rigs would be huge especially any that would be venturing near the reef. If you know which rigs they are you can google their positions and intended courses with the maritime safety bureau. The specific rigs have their home group pages as well and will give current and intended positions.

Exmouth Gas Rigs
Yep none of it will effect us ,we send choppers out to the rigs as it is and the one they are talking about is the BHP rig ,they are flying from Ktown so we missed out on that one , i think off hand they are allready drilling
they are drilling for Gas and the other rigs off Exxy are oil rigs

Facts
RESOURCES giant BHP Billiton has unveiled plans to explore for oil just 5km from the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, in the latest example of the industry's rapid encroachment of the environmentally fragile area off the West Australian coast.
The move comes after rival oil major Royal Dutch Shell began a $60 million drilling campaign this week within 50km of the reef, prompting environmentalists to call on the government to stop issuing exploration permits so close to the marine park and to conduct a study of the cumulative impact of exploration.

thoughts
I'm 50/50 on it, if it was 90km from shore, thats still fugging close if something goes pearshaped, 5km, well... Remember the timor sea a few years back. Wont take long to ruin your favourite fishing destination if that is the case. Tough one, jobs for 100 aussies or internationals with a shit load of money and resources that go elsewhere with small input of cash for town for infrastructure with decent risk to an iconic fishing and touro destination. Not sure how I feel about it really.

Regulatory bodies
Will be all over them like flies on dog shit, did a dive job on a rig close in to shore near dongara, environmental rules and regs were so well policed due to being visible from the coast it was actually fantastic..... Accidents can still happen though.

Fishers will loose
I was not talking about the risk to the environment so much but the likely restrictions to access. For example, if a rig setup at "The Steps" being a small area, fishers would loose out as you would no longer be able to fish there. It has happened before to us. As soon as you get near a rig they first get on the radio and tell you to rack off and if that does not work the rig sends a boat.

It would only be for a
It would only be for a certain amount of time usually 25 days to drill a hole. The rig will then move on. If they find gas then usually a ship sent to extract the gas or oil.

Sea-ken is on the money. The drill a hole, cap it and then put a platform in or FPSO usually and extract the oil and gas. Just means more
