Exmouth Report 2/1/09 - 10/1/09

After Coral Bay we headed to Exmouth, it was windy and hot there but we still managed to get the boat out 5 times. Went in the gulf once, back of the islands twice and Tantas twice.

I managed to get my first Mangrove Jack in 65m and got my first GT trolling in the Gulf. The 8/1/09 out at tantas was the best day with the fish really firing. I got a 12kg Mackie on my drift bait it did a wicked leap out of the water. We also got a heap of Rankins, chucked most back only kept 2 big ones that wouldnt go down, I also got my first Coronation Trout, Amanda got a nice Tomato cod also. From the looks of Adams pics on that day I should have trolled the skirts, maybe next time.

It was a different experience being in Exy in Jan, it was like a ghost town compared to April/May. It was also a laugh seeing the Emu's everywhere. Can't wait to get back there in April/May for 4 weeks, counting the days...

The fisheries inspector

The fisheries inspector idenitified it as a Mangrove Jack, I'll stick with that. For some reason it looks alot whiter in the pic.

Sorry mate, but the fisheries is wrong, this fisheries says its a dark tailed sea perch. :) Long slender snout = sea perch also white line inside the fork of tail.  Solid rankin's though, hope to find me some of those soon!!  You seem to have Exxy pretty sussed mate, nice work.

Fantastic fishing

Sat, 2009-01-17 15:57

Awesome fishing Simo considering the winds and the heat. Those Rankines are rippers. Go easy on the fisheries fella...he's only new in town. I've seen some very experienced fisherman mistake Red bass for Mangrove jacks. I love that Macki also Simo. Great photo.

Sun, 2009-01-18 09:27

Cant wait to get up there again Simo. Hoping to sneak a trip up in July and will definately be beack up next January. What sort of boat have you got? We left Exmouth on the 10th so I would have been up at the same time as you. We fished out from Bundegi on the 8th. Had a cracker day.

Mate some beaut fish. Try

Sun, 2009-01-18 11:17

Mate some beaut fish. Try fishing the gulf a bit more next time too. We  went  up  there last year and caught 138 species in 10 days (on fly). We stayed at a camp on the east side of the gulf called "wilderness Island". Used our own boat and payed jim accomodation rate. He runs charters but its ok to bring your own boat too and do your own thing. we're heading back there again this year, awsome fishing over that side of the gulf, creeks, flats, headlands, offshore reefs and bombies
