Exmouth Ruby - help wanted
heading to Exmouth in a few weeks and will be spending 90% of the time trolling for billfish out from tantabiddi - just before Gamex. Been doing this for a number of years and love catching billies .
One thing that's on my bucket list is a Ruby . Never targeted or caught one before . Was hoping to have a drop this year if we see anything on the sounder . We have electric reels so depth not a problem .
My questions are , what should I be looking for on the sounder - lumps , drop offs , or just fish .
is there a particular depth that they hang out ? , was thinking the 300mtr line would be a good start.
knife jigs or bait ?
Am I in the right location if fishing the west side straight out from Tantabiddi .
Not asking for gps spots ( although that would be great lol ) but a general area to keep an eye out would be apreciated .
Cheers Paul

300m line is where you want
300m line is where you want to start, we found them in 300m on a drop off to 330m, and 330m down to 360m. Litterally straight drops you will see the fish on the edge.
Didnt look too much south of the light house, straight out from the light house and north found some all mighty big lumps and ledges in 300-400m of water.
We baited fished for them, however given we were out just before the high probably could have dropped a jig down into them as the drift was pretty slow.

rubies
Hey Paul, as Bodie said 300m very good depth to start fished that dept for good success few months back. If you do put in around tandas we fished mainly south from there oposite direction to Bodie and found plenty. Generally you find 1 you find lots !!!!
Definatley look for a depth change I found fish sitting at top of lumps. good luck .
Also good luck to Gilly when you head up there would highly reccomend using lights on the rigs.

Gilly - where's exmouth ;)
We've got lights organised - have heard no lights = no fish over 250metres.....
paul, let me know how ou get on mate as Ruby's on my list too after many years thinking about it....looked at doing myself a few years ago and heard that: due-SW baring from north passage tantas was goer on 400m line and also heard 300m line due-west of closest oil rig to murions.....that's obvious pretty vague but is best / clearest info I could get from guys coming in with them every day.

mate without getting out the
mate without getting out the chart I can't give you exact distance but it's real close mate - ALOT CLOSER than metro waters
when you get thru tantas north passage before you blink you're in 70 and then 100
the deep water ridge moves closer to the shore the further north you are eg deep water off tantas is a lot closer than off coral bay, and off west side of murions it's real close.
can count on one hand in two dozen trips the amount of times we have 'had' to go over the horizon to catch decent fish....doesn't mean we haven't been out REALLY wide on the troll but very safe to say you can hit 500plus without using too much juice....

Head out the north passage at
Head out the north passage at Tantas & travel about 7nm west of there. That will put you in 300m. It's all down hill from there. Good luck & to Gilly.
Cheers & Stay safe

You can get them in the 200's
You can get them in the 200's as well as stated previously the finding the steep ledges with solid soundings on top is the key.

North of Coral bay
Has anyone chased them North of Coral Bay?
Looks like a 25nm stint North but the shelf comes right in similar to Exmouth. Is it a worthwhile trip?

Very close further south
the deep water ridge moves closer to the shore the further north you are eg deep water off tantas is a lot closer than off coral bay, and off west side of murions it's real close.
You can be north of Coral bay and south of Yardie Creek and you will find the deep water is closest there, of all----Only a few miles off the stretch South of Winderabandi Point down to Norwegian Bay, which is why the whales really cut the corner there, and why they established a whaling station. I reckon it would only be 15 minutes on a good day to 300 metres + out of the South Lefroy entrance. Only one boat that I know of out of there does it in the period we stay there (June/July), and it's all he does.

Ranmar that sounds excellent
Ranmar that sounds excellent mate
thanks for the info; been going up there for a long time an never knew that the deep stuff came in so close down that way....interesting info for sure.
To be honest I've never ventured that far south of tantas with my boat.... How far south is it exactly? And do you launch off beach down there or steam down from tantas?
Interested to pick your brain on the subject!!!

yup
As others have said. Over 200m depth usually. A lot of the time you will find grey band in holes of up to 5-30m and then rubies on the flats either side of the hole. Lots of areas for them out there. Ive caught them out there in 470m north of the lighthouse and fave was 260m 25nm south of tantas.
