FAD's Report 3/4/11

We headed out to the Fads again last Sunday with high hopes of landing our first dollyies, as none of us had ever landed one. We were still flat after the two monsters we lost last week but as we arrived at the FAD it didn’t take long to have our first sighting, they were a bit picky but there were hundreds of them compared to the very few we saw last week, however the size was also a long way different. We were getting very frustrated with the hundreds of bloody mutton birds, as we had caught two birds before we had a hook up with the animal we were after. We finally got a bait down and a school smashed the baits and we had a triple hook up and we later lost all three to being busted off around the FAD. However it didn’t take long for another hook up and this time we got the other rods out before another fish could take it, we finally got the fish on board and we were getting the hang of these slippery little fish as we bagged out within an hour and left them biting in the perfect conditions.

Heres a few pics

if the mutton birds are annoying you and you get your line tangled in them just pluck a few feathers out of the one you catch and throw them out at the same time as your bait the other birds wont come near the feathers and most times will dissapear!!

hey mate i was on one of the other boats that was out there on the same day. just a little bit of constructive critasism , i noticed when you were setting up your drift you were going right onto the fad and casting as close to the fad as possible ,the probably why you got busted off. what we do is set up about 100 metres past and drift about 30 metres away and cast around the fad , remember the fish arnt glued to the fad and most of the time will follow yor boat up to 200 metres away from the fad. just a few pointers from my observations , on the other hand though i left about 4 hooks in birds on the weeknds because they kept taking our bait but we got onto 10+ dollys just fishing on really light gear so it was good fun and the weather was awsome

Like i said this was our second time out there, but we found the fish schooling up right next to the FAD and as we drifted further away they got tinner. Id rather loose fish than not hook them all, and the only reason we lost them was because we had a tripple and they all ran different ways around the FAD, we didnt loose a single one after that. But like you said good fun on the light gear, im gonna see how i go on my bream gear next time.
