Naive or fuckin stupid

Sat, 2017-09-23 15:00

you've got to be one or the other posting a picture with a cray in the background weeks before the season opens,  and anyone that owns a boat and pots can't be that naive.

Broken freezer

Sat, 2017-09-23 15:04

Broken freezer went unnoticed for 2 days, made for plenty of bait and burley. Cray is from last season. Assumptions can leave you looking silly buddy.

I didn't think you could use cray for burley or bait at all? Has that changed?

All good

Sat, 2017-09-23 15:17

In saying that though, I bet Fisheries would tell me to come up with a better excuse than that if they saw me with a cray on the boat. At least the thing was half rotten and smelt like it too

So you bag him for a Gummy with babies, but yet not a word on this site about the mass slaughter going on of pre spawn snapper?

Wed, 2017-09-27 09:07

Are you talking about the 650 tonne of Pinks that the Pros take or the 50 odd tonne the Recs take Sulo?

Sure its not ideal taking anything pre spawn but if the fuckwit fisheries management in this state were more about preserving fish stocks than bowing down to the professional fratenity then they'd have the no take ban more species specific rather than a 2 month block ( albeit only for the recs ) that covers the demersals that most of the ammos target...

I have no issue at all with RohanKok taking a preg gummy, Me personally i'd be getting the pups out and give them a chance long before worrying about a glam shot with a small gummy...

If a 3ft Gummy gives someone a stiffy that is photo worthy then it tells me they perhaps haven't done very much fishing in their time, this is why i suggested he'll learn from this, maybe i'm wrong or maybe he wont...

It's a fishing site. People put up pictures of their catch. Is there a minimum size limit on fish in photos? He didn't say he ate it, he wasn't bragging about his massive catch, it was merely a "look what I caught", and good on him. Try supporting and encouraging new members rather than being a negative prick Timboon

No rules

Wed, 2017-09-27 13:59

No rule to say you cant use crays for bait or burley ( that I can find ) It would be up to you for an explanation to fisheries if needed.

The gummy was very fat and released, nice job mate. No problems, maby just a poor choice in having the cray in the picture.

Thanks for sharing .

I regularly use

Wed, 2017-09-27 16:25

I quite often use smashed up cray heads and legs as well as prawn heads for burly. When I've had a freezer burnt cray quite often I'll take that out and use for berley as well, nothing illegal in that as far as I'm aware of.

Great for baldies

Wed, 2017-09-27 16:53

I've used smashed cray heads for luring in baldies when spearfishing on shallow reefs in Karratha before. The baldies came from all directions!

 Good shit releasing the fat

Wed, 2017-09-27 20:09

Good shit releasing the fat chic and pups Rohan,

Apologies given where warranted, For some reason i did assume she was taken for some fish n chips as a Gummy is hard to beat so again my apologies for assuming she hit the filleting table...

I advise to use whatever is easiest to get your hands on for bait n berley so i have no issue with using crays or whatever, i'm just careful who sees it...

All good mate

Wed, 2017-09-27 20:42

All good mate, no hard feelings here. We are all passionate about the ocean and the animals in it so most of us sometimes get a bit carried away. I studied marine science, environmental science, microbiology, zoology and environmental management at 2 different universities in 2 countries. I now work as a marine and environmental scientist in WA to manage compliance with industrial and domestic waste water discharges to the marine environment. So believe me when I say that I care for what I catch and that I share your passion.

Now, I have a boat to pack as I'm taking the boat to Denham for a week this Saturday. Will post some more (less controversial) photos of my trip when I get back

Cray as bait or burley ........... ??

Fri, 2017-09-29 14:40

After reading a few comments above I thought I would go to the source and ask Fisheries with respect to the legality of using cray as bait or burley.  Their reponse was it is illegal based on Reg 35 which states:

"Regulation 35. Fish Resources Management Regulation.

Rock lobster flesh, possession of

A person must not possess or sell a Part only of a rock lobster unless —

(a) authorised to do so under a fish processor’s licence and the part is a part of a whole rock lobster which was processed at the place specified in the licence as the place at which fish are to be processed; or

(b) the part was purchased from the place specified in a fish processor’s licence as the place at which rock lobster isto be processed and the person has a receipt detailing that purchase; or

(c) the part is —

(i) being consumed; or

(ii) prepared, or being prepared, for immediate consumption.

Penalty: In the case of an individual, $5 000 or, in the case of a body corporate, $10 000 and in either case, the penalty."

This was further clarified with the following comments:

"If you are in POSSESSION of rock lobster outside of the private residence and the lobster is not in whole form then you are in possession of a PART of a Rock Lobster. Crushed, chopped or other wise.

You can obviously purchase parts of lobster but would need a receipt to show proof outside of the home.

Any lobster is only to be  dismantled for the purpose of being prepared for immediate consumption. Excepting the latest amendment to store tails in a private residence.

So therefore the answer is No according to legislation you would be in possession of a part of a rock lobster and committing an offence.

Whether or not such offence is in the public interest or whether Fisheries would pursue such offence, I can not comment on. However according to legislation I have to advise you that you can’t."

That's it, the loonies have taken over the asylum

Fri, 2017-09-29 16:57

Thanks for the info Alan, I'm left wondering just what I'm to do with the heads after I have removed them from the tails (which the new regs allow us to do for storage).

At a guess I'd say that the reg is to stop people taking the heads of undersize crays at sea, no head = no way of proving cray is undersize.

Whist I can see what the reg is trying to stop, if the head is cooked then I think it would go some way of mitigating the circumstances of the head being in your possession at see along with the reasoning behind having it ie: burley .

It still leaves a crazy situation IMO and IU must admit I don't have an answer for the situation ...at the moment.

Yep

Sat, 2017-09-30 18:43

I was told to not even have cray legs on the boat (that fall off) when I go fishing, as its not allowed.

Fisheries guy understood it was a silly rule, but rule nonetheless.
