FCV 620 can anyone tell me what it's showing

Hey guys as the title says I have a furuno fcv 620 and I am just wondering if anyone can tell me by the pictures what it is its reading? And if so how do you tell the difference between what it is reading and also any tips on a better setup. Any help would be great thanks

Others may have a much better opinion then me but your gain is way to high for that depth and it looks like a lot of clutter with some smallish fish sitting on the bottom.

 That looks like wayyyyyy too

That looks like wayyyyyy too much gain and there are multiple bottom echos. How deep was the water you were in? *Edit - I see it was 11m*

This is a simple 2 pager on how to set your base tune of the furuno sounders. First page is an explanation of what each item does and the second page is a how-to set the basics.

Thanks for that. Will save that page and give it a try seems helpful. So nothing in that pic? What about the red at "8" would that be anything? And do certain fish or structures show up certain colours?

There is something there but the gain is so high that its not showing its true size the darker the colour the larger the swim bladder.

As others have said to much

As others have said to much gain mate ill fish 6.5 in 250 mtrs with my 585. Best bet in that depth put the sounder on auto fishing mode by pressing the gain button and select fishing and it will give you a much beta idea on what is goin on and get rid of the clutter

As z00m said, the multiple bottom returns in the right image are the giveaway... You have the gain so high the signal is firing from the transducer, off the bottom back to the boat, then bouncing off the hull, back to the bottom, then back to the boat, bouncing off the hull and back to the bottom and back to the boat.  Thus the three bottom returns at 12, 24 and 36 metres.

In tuning the gain people often increase the range and turn up the gain until you can just see a second bottom return and then change the range back to the depth you are actually in.  This should give you some small clutter in the background but a proper idea of what is actually there in the water column and bottom.  The red line showing the bottom as the most dense object on the screen, anything showing up hard red in the water column should be the same density as the bottom.

I dunno about the 'darker the color the largerr the swim bladder' comment as the swim bladder contains air and not being very dense. I would have thought it would show up in a lighter shade.

Best bet mate is go in real shallow clear water say 5/8 mtrs were you can clearly see what's on the bottom eg weed sand rock and see how your sounder looks over different types of bottom as it will show the same when you head deeper mate hope it gelps

Put it in simulator  mode , get out the manual,  have a read and play around with the settings.  You can do this in your driveway. It will give you a better understanding of how the functions work.

Question for JohnF

Tue, 2015-03-10 10:39

Do you know if the gain settings translate between 600/1kw transducers? I believe the SS264's you are running have a much better 'Q' rating than the T/M 600W units, does this extra sensitivity mean you can run lower gain?

I was having trouble with my

Tue, 2015-03-10 21:00

I was having trouble with my transom mounted 1kw tranny on my boat at speeds above 12 knots due to a range of things so installed a p79 (600w)shoot thru hull for my fcv 585. Often chopped and changed between the 2 trannys over time to see which I preferred in water under 50m and the 600w was just as good for most applications, always found good fish both bottom fishing and trolling for bills. As said above gain way too high and no need to go above 5.0-5.5 for depths out to 50-70+ meters. Subtle changes are often worth looking at with the gain down I found.

Cheers
