from what i can understand you can in some areas as long as the fillets are of a certain length compared to the frame and skin is left on for identification. you should be able to get all the rules on the fisheries site

ive had a few disagreements

Tue, 2011-02-08 16:41

ive had a few disagreements about this in the past with deckies and on some charters

this is the way i read the rules correct me if im wrong

you can fillet at sea as long as the skin remains on and its at least 300mm long

only exception is high risk Cods (includes
breaksea cod, harlequin
fish, grey banded rock
cod and Chinaman cod

not sure what ill do if i get 2 30kg grey banded cod at sea they wont fit in a esky?

and why is breaksea cod high risk i see plenty caught and i  release because i dont like eating them

The only fish I see that you can't fillet at sea are black bream, tailor and estuary cod, everything else so long as it's over 300mm and skin/scales still on your good to go.  Does anyone actually do this or do you guys bring home whole and process at home??

these rules do my head in

these rules do my head in evey one has a diffrent interpataiom

can i ask where it says about the bream tailer and estry cod

this is the extract im reading thats how i came to my conclusion above

Special Risk species must always be landed whole on a day
trip. These are shown in the ‘Bag and Size Limits’ section.
They may be filleted after a lawful overnight stay on an island.

on my boat i always fillet at sea just less mess and the day is over once the boat is cleaned

ill fillet asap some days and get them fillets on ice

If you look at the bag limit

If you look at the bag limit section you will find the 3 fish I listed highlited in red/pink then if you look at the bottom of each of the bag limit pages it says that red/pink indicates must be landed whole.  Considering there is no Special Risk in the bag limit section specifically listed this is how I came to my list.
