Finally my first report
Hi All,
a few months back i purchased my first tug, 21ft fibreglass - it has been a long life dream to finally get off shore and catch some good fish in my own boat. Over the past few months i have been heading out around Rotto trying to get my feet and doing a heap of research (thanks to the FW fishos posting reports, this has helped heaps) after months of nothing i finally landed myself a little spot of Rotto, so here goes on my first report:
So me and a mate decided to go sunday morning at about 11pm Sat night after having about 12 stubbies each - bit of last minute stuff but after having a look at the weather it was a no brainer (after i got the leave pass through the cheese and kisses, lucky she had a few by then), got to bed around 1am after making some last minute rigs up.
First drop we got a small BA and Gurnard, from then on we started getting smashed by large SGT Bakers - 50cm
Great start to the day as we had plenty of fresh bait to hopefully get my first big dhuie on board, i was excited to say the least.
bit later on after a few more drifts past the our new spot we ended up getting a small Dhuie, i was stoked as i thought it was size - negative, only went 48cm so was dissapointed to say the least, but the dissapointment was short lived as i finally got onto something a big bigger, after a good fight i landed a solid queeny (4kg) which is about perfect size so i have read, i was over the moon becuase it was the first descent fish that had been landed in my boat
the mullet was killing it. getting good thumps but mssing alot of descent fish - was a bit weird that nothing was really taking the Sgt Bakers, when we run out of mullet (wont be doing that again) - the bites dried up and we decided to move on.
We decided to go a bit closer into Rotto in about 20 metres of water as i really wanted to land a pinky, dropped the line sat back and poured myself a jacks - next thing the rod bent over, jacks went all over me as i grabbed the rod, off like a rocket 5 mins late after a good fight it surface FK ME i yell out its a Shark, as it surfaced it took off again, almost with me overboard, finally after a few late runs around the boat we get the little physco on board - did not come quietly.
finally i thought i could have a rest - school boy error, was only round 3 off it went again, thrashing around the boat, sinkers and shit flying everywhere - my mate has a cracker of bruise on his shin.
after a few WWF moves and a flying leg drop from the canopy and a rear naked choke he finally tapped out.
Apparently they are really good eating, so if anyone has a good shark recipe pls let me know.
So all in all was descent day out with finally some fish to come home to show the family, so im happier than a pig in shit, still hunting for my elusive 15kg Dhui but thats the great thing about fishing, will just have to keep the chin up and keep trying.
Some good fillets below for the freezer.
Sorry if it was a bit long winded - thanks for reading and hope you enjoyed.
Cheers Dan

Persist with the Sergent
Persist with the Sergent Bakers Dant, all our fish on the weekend were caught on them. I've mentioned this before Tempura batter your shark and deep fry and serve with coleslaw and sweet chilli dipping sauce. Good Friday night meal with beers ;) Oh and grab a solid lump of wood and silence the sharks over the side.

Haha .. good report Dant ,
Haha .. good report Dant , yeah those sharks certainly get a second wind when they see the boat .. coupla bangs to the scone and a spike usually settles them , need to bleed them straight away as well .. we seem to be getting those just undersize dhus of late as well .. The sgt bakers usually are a great bait bonus , haven't tried mullet . We usually buy a box of the cali squid these days a good alround bait that fits nicely on a snelled rig .

Not long winded at all and an enjoyable read with an injection of humour. Keep pluggin away and that dhuie will be yours.

haha laughing at the thought
haha laughing at the thought of that shark firing up on the deck. certainly had my share of those experiences!
Looks like you got a good feed, nice work.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

We've got a Penance stick on board that's been used before... Saves the jock changes from the shark going mental... :-)
Good write up...

Thanks all for your comments,
Thanks all for your comments,
Decalla - sand snapper are all grey, me and my mate were pretty certain it was a queeny due to the yellow on top of the head and through the eyes, but was not 100 percent sure it wasn't a dusky morwong

Take willy up on his offer
Those Allie bats cost $$ and I think a wooden "Nulla nulla" beats anything. A nice chant as you give it a headache too going "nulla, nulla"
I am also waiting with anticipation about the next captures. Hope its not a bigger bronzy or similar, because that onboard would cause chaos, and some great laughs from us
