First Crabs of 2011

Managed to get out in the river last night for a quick session before the sun went down.

Got 7 in an hour and a half. Few big buggers too which is awesome to see.

Will look to head out again this week to see how early morning goes.

Nice work bowds. Chilli crab is my personal preference but manna with fresh bread and butter aint bad either. Never tried them with vinegar, how does it taste?

Nice catch. cant say im a big

Tue, 2011-01-18 13:17

Nice catch. cant say im a big fan of eating crab (love catching them) but here is a pretty basic Crab Bisque if anyone wants a go. Its very French and very delicious! only takes about 15 - 20 min.

1.  butter 8 grams, Mix of finely chopped (onion, carrot, celery) 10grams, crab 2 or 3. Cut crabs into quarters or halves and crack claws. Melt butter, add mix and sweat then add crab and fry lightly.

2.  Brandy 25ml, Pernod 10ml. Pour over crab and flambe (this bits fun)

3.  tomato paste 5 grams. cook out.

4.  Flour 4 grams. mix in thoroughly

5.  Fish stock 600ml, dry white wine 100ml, bay leaf 1, thyme sprig, parsley & dill stalks 10grams each, salt & pepper to taste. Add all all together, bring to boil, skim, season and simmer for 20min. Strain.

6.  Add 100ml cream and 25 ml Brandy bring to boil and serve.

* recover some meat from claws to use as texture and garnish.

Ate the Big 19cm crab last

Wed, 2011-01-19 09:10

Ate the Big 19cm crab last night. FULL OF MEAT. Had my feed just of the one crab. Claws were a little bit mushy, but inside the main shell was delicious. Will look to get down again this week sometime.

Got 6 more last night. Big

Fri, 2011-01-21 13:43

Got 6 more last night. Big buggers again. Tried on south side of canning bridge on freeway side and got 3 within 2 pulls which was good. Seems to be a few around there. Trying around at BWR this arvo. Chicken wings this time also.

Under the Narrows

Tue, 2011-01-25 20:52

5 good size in 1.5 hours this morning - got them all in first half hour and then nothing for an hour before I called it quits.  Might have got there a bit late - 6.45am -  as other people were returning to  the boat ramp as I went out and they all said they got a good feed.

Was on the water at 4:15am

Thu, 2011-02-03 09:14

Was on the water at 4:15am this morning and managed to get 12 with my mate by 6:45. Majority were around the 14-16cm mark which was good but no 19cm+ like last time.

Having a full 10 nets helped and once again it seems like they went of the bite by about 6:30. Well and truly after the sun was up.

Pretty happy getting 12 in that time period. Good to see they are still around. anyone know what time of the year they start to drop off in the Swan?
