First decent tailer

Hi All,

I went sunday evening for a quick surf cast and got my first decent tailer. Didn't measure it but guessing it in mid 40s.

Next target is mulloway (hopefully soon)

Well done mate. Keep the next one around the same size or smaller to fillet up as bait for that mulloway.

I was fishing down mandura way. Plenty of bream there but very small size.

Area looks very promising for bigger fish. Next time i will make sure to spend enough time there to snag a big one.

Question: does it require a longer cast if targetting mulloway?

All depends on the beach at

All depends on the beach at the time your fishing it mate. Ideally you want structure in the form of a rip or gutter that the mulloway are likely to be hunting around. Gutters can be in close or right out so you need to be able to cast however far out the gutter is. That might only be 30-40m or closer to 100m depending on the structure of the beach your fishing. Mulloway like to hunt in the stirred up water out the back of rips so my usual tactic is to use a ball sinker only just big enough to keep the bait on the bottom but to still allow the current to take it wherever it wants. You cover more ground this way & the bait looks more natural if its allowed to move with the current rather than just anchored in the one spot.
