First metre Barra

it took me 18 months but finally cracked the metre mark. Land based on a soft plastic couple of months ago but thought I would share it. Was sooo stoked just wish I wasn't alone so I could have got a decent photo with it. PB before that was 87cm

Wickham

Wed, 2015-12-23 21:38

I live in Wickham mate, so just around the Point Samson area when i'm land based, tried out Balla Balla as well but had a lot more luck around home. Only have a 5.2m glass boat so i don't take it down the creeks it's only for the blue water.

 Thanks fellas, i'd hate to

Wed, 2015-12-23 22:20

Thanks fellas, i'd hate to think how many hours and thousands of casts i've put in to try and figure everything out. But i've got a fairly good idea now and know when to head down and have a crack so i can give myself the best chance at a fish. I only fish plastics for Barra here as i'm lazy and cant be bothered with live baits, definately a beleiver in the things now after catching a bunch of nice Barra and Jacks on them. When i was in Vic i always thought they were a waste of time. Ended up with this metrey an 80cm and 57cm along with 4 or so 40cm+ jacks in just a couple of trips so it was a pretty good start to the season.

Poppers

Fri, 2015-12-25 17:36

Have you tried poppers at night.  When I lived in ktown a few years back I used to love heading out samson way at all hours of the night tide and wind dependent. The hotter and stiller the better getting smashed by mozzies and sand flies.  Halco 80 roosters with super sticky owner hooks worked real slow did the job. Love the barra boof on a popper at night and usually no one around.  I caught more this way than any other method in that area.

No I haven't tried poppers

Sun, 2015-12-27 08:47

No I haven't tried poppers yet but I do have a couple. Going to take the old boy down tonight so I might give them a crack as well Cheers for the advice. The strike on poppers would be great fun! hopefully we can get one but I've never had as much luck this close to the full moon. Will see how we go anyway

 Some times at night you

Sun, 2015-12-27 10:52

Some times at night you could hear a boof from hundreds of metres away in the stillness.  A bit of mud trudging with the headlamp on you could narrow down where it was coming from and most times youd almost always get  a hit. They are hard to hook but the boof is awsome. Long casts and slow eratic blooping is the go with long pauses in between. Say bloop bloop bloop and then a 3-5 second sit. Hits usually come on the sit. Rooster poppers are the best  I found for this.  Worked awsome in the kimberlies also when i was there afew years ago just crocs to contend with also. Yeh I found the darker nights were better . Its like fishin in the middle of the day on a full moon.

Soft Plastics

Wed, 2015-12-23 23:18

Do you fish soft plastics under a float so you dont have to waste time or effort casting???

 No there's plenty of time

Wed, 2015-12-23 23:26

No there's plenty of time and effort casting. Just not collecting bait, trying to keep the buggers alive and getting covered in mud in the creeks throwing the net to get it before i even get started!. I can't throw a net to save myself and i've tried, Just rather turn up with my esky and gear and get into it. Intermission every so often for a beer. That said i'd like to give the livies a go one time, just need a mate that can throw the net.

Sshhh secret spot haha!

Cheers mate, gives it away a little to the those who know the area haha. All good though as long as people don't rape and pilllage the big girls, still see quite a few fishing down there but not too many catching.

Well done!

A 5.2 glass boat will get you into all the major creeks between Whickam and Balla, better than a dinghy for the ocean voyage anyway and you can stash more gear for an overnighter.Buy a cheap 11 ft tinny or even a zodiac and tow it in, enter your chosen creek at high tide and anchor up. You can then fish the low in the smaller boat. The fishing further up the coast is massively better than Whiickam.

you are on to it with the plastics, live bait can be a pain in the arse.On the bigger tides when you only get a smaller window on the low try a 110 hallco trembler slowly twitched , if the fish are on everything will smash them.

PM me if you want any more info, Don't mind giving you my spots as I am Pilbara no more.
