First Mulloway; All class or arse, you decide.

With no boat to head out on anymore and the weather for yesterday evening looking primo I made a late arvo decision to try my luck at catching my first beach mulla. Having not beach fished with baits and long rods for at least 4 years I quickly shot out to Compleat Angler Rockingham for some tackle and bait. The staff helped me out with rigs and I left the store with somewhat of an idea of what to do.

As we left for the coast I still had no idea what beach we were even going to fish at, absolutely no thought was even put into what I was doing as it was such a last minute decision to head out. We pulled up at a pathway over the dunes and we setup right in front. First couple of baits were smashed by tailor and a couple of my rigs bitten off too then I got a herring on the flicky and that went back out in half on the bigger rod. Kept fishing with the flicky hoping for a big whiting for a bait for my brother when I noticed the tip of the big rod slightly bouncing in the rod holder, tap tap tap tap... I ran over and picked up the rod and held it for a bit feeling the tap tap tap. I slowly put some tension on the line and came up solid so struck hard and the reel came to life. The fish was zig zagging just under the breakers, I called it for a big tailor then the fish took off up the beach.

The ticker was starting to beat a bit harder by this stage, but the last thing I wanted to do was rush it and pull the hooks so just let whatever it was on the end of my line play out just behind the breakers. As we got it infront of the breakers I started saying that it could be a ray or shovelnose just to keep me level-headed but deep inside I was hoping for a mulla. Cody ran back to where we had setup to grab the gaff and thats when the fishes tail come out the water and I noticed the yellow tinge of a translucent tail, this was no shark or ray! It took 2 waves for the fish to wash up on the sand where Cody was waiting with the gaff where he pinned it in the jaw and dragged it up the sand. It wasnt until I picked the fish up that I realised it wasnt just a soapie, but a fair lump of silver sheen!

After a few quick photos I jumped in the water with her and walked out to chest deep water, copping waves on the head. It was all worth it when with one big thump of the tail she cruised out of my hands back into the big blue.

Bloody hell. Ive caught one, ive caught one on my very first attempt at targetting one! I just kept telling Cody that this just doesnt happen, not on your first go. It was all the stories of guys putting in hundreds of hours and still no glory that had put me off this whole time. People say "the first one is the hardest, it gets easier from there," I had been on that beach for one hour!!

Still cant believe it really, I can finally say I have caught a fish of a lifetime.
Stoked!

Great job there Beau, good reading and pics, but seriously, you must have been kissed on the d#$k by the fishing fairy! Who gets to do that? And metro too.

Still keen to get you out on the boat one day, but reckon I might just sit back and watch you catch everything.

Very jealous.

Thats crazy, ive put in so much time only for small soapies, probably around the area you fished as well. Well done, jealous as.

I know the feeling I picked up a 65cm LB dhuie on my first attempt at targetting them but havent got one since. No doubt youll get stuck into the mullas again.

Good stuff

 "Late decision"

"Not beached fished for a least 4 years"

"left store with somewhat of an idea"

"Left for coast! still no idea what beach"

 "No thought"

"Kept fishing with flicky for big whiting for bait!"

 "Called it for big tailor"

"Wasnt until i picked up the fish i realised it wasnt a soupie"

 "Very first attemp"

"First one is the hardest then it gets easier from here! I had been at that beach for one hour"

Phukin rub it in why dont ya!!

Top fish, congrats!, with no boat we might be seeing more of these?
