First Sambo

So, headed out with a mate from Hillarys targeting whiting and ended up with this! Got to the ramp around 8am as the easterly was up a bit. Logged on as we left the marina and received a little warning from the volunteer sea rescue that the winds were pretty strong where we were headed. Got to the first spot, drift was a bit quick and caught a yakka and small sand whiting. Kept moving about trying a variety of spots and only ended up with a couple of undersized flathead, returned safely. We moved to some broken ground on the 3 mile, burleyed up and could still only manage a couple if wrasse. I'd kept the yakka swimming nicely and hooked him up as a livey which converted into my first ever sambo. We were in 13m and had full drag on my Penn fathom overhead with 50lb braid and 80lb leader. It stripped line off and I was worried it would bust me off on the reef, but after a surprisingly short fight, got it boat side and then over the rail. Not sure of size but it was the biggest I had ever caught, being my first. It swam away strongly as I had heard they weren't too good to eat at this size. Pretty happy with the result anyway.

Pretty stoked, a fair way from pots and just heavy. Glassed off as we were sitting in this spot and was beautiful to see the size of the fish underwater so clearly.
