Fish head ID

Just thought i would throw this up to see other people opinions on what fish this may be?

As you can see its only the head(about the size of my 11 boot) and it has been decaying for a bit. My first thoughts is a Hapuka?

But the location that i found it has me baffled. I'll see what other people think it may be, before saying were i found it.

definitely not a mulloway, the muscle around te mouth is too big in my opinion. That second pic makes the head look more elongated than a mulloway. Yewie, I think you are bloody well spot on with the Hapuka!

Sorry should have stipulated

Sorry should have stipulated that it wasnt in Australia.

I actually found this head on the shore of a Lake along the Routeburn Track(Google location if you dont know where this is) on South Island N.Z. Sort of to the north of Queenstown. So thats what had me mega stumped.

http://routeburntrack.info/wordpress/map-and-driving-information/

I thought massive Trout to begin with but on closer inspection i though Hapuka as i know they do get them off the coast of South Island N.Z

But.......

First of all it was on the shore of a freshwater lake VERY far away from any ocean with massive mountains inbetween.

Second no roads or habitation within 5km and along a quiet arduous walking track. So doubt someone would have walked all the way there to dump it there after a fishing trip.

I thought maybe someone may have dumped it somehwere near the coast and maybe a large hawk may have grabbed it and dropped it there, but i dont think the native birds of prey are big enough to lift it and the coast is a fair whack away over numerous mountain ranges????

So i started thinking is there some sort of freshwater species in N.Z i dont know about?????

I am still convinced it is a Hapuka head but have no idea how it could come to where it was.

Anyone else have any theories?

Now I am totally guessing

But they have some mighty big eels in freshwater over there. Could it be an eel head? A bloody big one!

Hapuka for sure but im having troubke explaining how it came to be where you found it.

Milford is really quite close to the Routeburn track, perhaps fallen/thrown out of a helicopter either by accident or as a joke from someone flying into Qtown.

I recon Cransy's got it, seem to remember Jeremy Wade (River Monsters) fishing for eels in the fresh water lakes in NZ and he pulled out some huge ones and said they can grow to up to 2mtrs at maturity when they then migrate to the ocean.
