immature pistol prawn to me or another name is a prawn killer. They actually eat prawns. They get quite big. Have seen them and eaten them at about 20cm long. Although they were alot lighter in colour. Correct me if I am wrong!!! Anyone..
Yeah the Prawn Killer or Mantis Shrimp is different, and holding it like that would result in some nice cuts to your fingers from the barbs. i picked one up in a northern creek one day and was rewardedwith some nice cuts to the fingers. Its looks more like a freshwater yabbie or something similiar to me.
I asked our Curator of Crustacea, Andrew Hosie, and this was his reply:
Not the easiest group to simply eyeball. Certainly one of the many pistol or snapping shrimps around. Two options based on the dark green colour, size and locality: Alpheus novaezealandiae or A. richardsoni. Alpheus richardsoni has brownish banding along the abdomen and on the tips of the pincers and tail fan. Both are relatively common in sandy/rocky shallow waters across southern Australia and NZ. They are edible, but there doesn’t seem to be any pistol shrimp species that is of particular importance as a fishery.

Nah its not a prawn killer... Prawn killers have front legs (nippers) that are similar to a praying mantis...
hmm nah I maybe wrong though... Im thinking of Killer Prawns.... not prawn killers.... or am I... Geez I need to knock off!!! lol
I think the proper name for a Prawn killer is Mantis shrimp... But this 1 in the pic is definately not one of those..
